Wow, that’s a big loss! Code Red is such a great label. I still haven’t watched the documentary about him. How much of Code Red was just Bill being a one man show? I just started listening to the They Live By Film podcast and it’s crazy to find out how small some of these boutique Blu-ray labels really are. The way I found it is by making a Mondo Macabro purchase and seeing that rather than going to Mondo Macabro it just goes to the PayPal account of one of their few employees. It sounds sketchy but that’s just their SOP. And they’re one of the more established boutique horror Blu-ray labels! Another company based in the UK, Fractured Visions is literally just one guy. Even the higher selling companies like Vinegar Syndrome have few hands behind the wheels. They’ll get thousands of orders this month for Black Friday. If your order take a while to get to you it’s because they have like 8 employees. I think even Severin Films brings volunteers in to help with packing up their Black Friday/other sale orders. They don't seem to keep a very large staff year round.

So I watched All Jacked Up and Full of Worms. I was not a fan. I don’t have a review to link for you because I’m not sure if I’m going to publish it…and if I do it won’t be until the weekend. The review was just a stream of consciousness about the movie after watching it as opposed to a review that discusses its merits or themes or ideas or point. Because the movie had none of those things.
Just know that I hated so much about this movie. Also I think everyone should watch it.

I watched Barbarian last week. I definitely enjoyed it, but I didn't find it as mind-bending original as the hype would suggest. Like, if you strip away the modern technology and neat little narrative tricks, it's basically a ridiculous Lucio Fulci movie circa 1980. Think House by the Cemetery with cell phones.

Forbidden World (1982) by Allan Holzman Wow, that was shit. It got a remake in 1991. Why? "Forbidden World" is two parts "Star Wars" and many parts "Alien". It starts and ends with respecitvely five minutes of bad Space Opera introducing Hans Solo and Roboba Fett as his Chewbacca surrogate. They land on a desert planet to kill an alien life form in a scientific base. Hans Solo is loved by every woman, his robot is shut off for no reasons for half of the movie. The alien looks bad, but it can't be seen much anyway. "Forbidden World" has some of the worst editing of any horror movie. At least June Chadwick is very, very nice to follow.

As a devotee of aquatic horror fiction, those novels concerning megs in particular, I sat in my favorite seat to savor this one but failed to find much delight in it. There were too many facts thrown at the reader; plus I found it overly descriptive about people's actions and movements. As an example, just tell me a boat is launched. I do not need a treaty on how. The too few shark scenes were super exhilarating and often scary, and the book would have benefited greatly from more. The characters are appropriately fleshed out, just not particularly interesting. It is possible I might have enjoyed it more if I had read it in the original English. By all means read it; luckily, the novel is not too long. Still, for me, this came up short. PS The NBC miniseries advertised on the cover never came to fruition.

I started watching "Syngenor" (1990) by George Elanjian Jr. and I can confidently say that this movie could have been inspired by "Terminator". What gives? The mood of the intro, the synthesizer music, the evil weapons manufacturer called "Norton Cyberdyne." Subtle things. Then I went searching for the name "Cyberdyne" and am a bit amazed at how many companies thought it was a good idea to name themselves after the fictional company that would bring about the end of the world.

I haven't seen it or the film it's a sequel to, SCARED TO DEATH, but if SCARED TO DEATH used the same name, that would actually predate THE TERMINATOR in using Cyberdyne.

I haven't seen it either, but there's no hint on the internet that Cyberdyne was already a thing in "Scared to Death". Kinda disappointing. :/

Subspecies (1991) by Ted Nicolaou There are three sequels and a spin-off, but I'm good after the first one. Vampires aren't my forte and "Subspecies" didn't change that. If I have to say something positive: Filming in Romania gives "Subspecies" a distinctive feeling. It's getting destroyed by the plot and the acting, but the difference between actual Romania and other movies pretending to take place in Romania is jarring.
Now the worst of the worst: Anders Hove as evil vampire Radu (lead actress Laura Tate playing Michelle Morgan is awful, too). German Radu literally has the dubbed voice of Grouchy Smurf. His skinny rubber fingers and narrow choppers make him walk like Jessica Rabbit. Thanks to his fangs, he drools worse than a St. Bernard. Not a drop of blood remains in his mouth. Radu is the external and character counterpart of his father Vladislav. Nosferatu next to Dracula. Such a contrast is not a bad choice to present him as an antagonist and make it clear that not all vampires are evil. But Radu looks ridiculous. Ugly in a harmless way. I was on a graduation trip to Transylvania from my folk high school days. There we met intimidating bloodsuckers, their eyes casting cones of light in the dark that reached across entire fields of turnips. One tried to bite me, but I was wearing a shirt with a starched collar. His teeth didn't penetrate that, so he let me pee on in peace.
So, "Subspecies" no bueno.

You should review Jeepers Creepers Reborn because I like the idea of you torturing yourself for my entertainment.

I don't remember much about The Love Witch other than it was gorgeous, garish, she made love potions and the man sitting two seats from me DESPERATELY wanted to see her naked.
Like, maybe she was? Perhaps I have the memory suppressed somewhat because he would "Hoo-hoo-hoo" for an uncomfortably long length of time when she got down to her lingerie.

She’s mostly covered by her long hair…but you can see some stuff. If you’re into that sort of thing. Which I am.

I started the blog when it was in theaters and had to decide if I wanted to go watch it or hold off for a Jeepers Creepers series run later. I saw the reviews and thought…yeah I’ll wait lol.

I don't think I've ever been able to revisit the Jeepers Creepers series since I discovered the truth about Victor Salva.

Only tangentially related to horror, but TIL Altered Innocence, a Vinegar Syndrome partner label specializing in LGBT films, has a sub label. They focus on classic LGBT films. The name? Anus Films. Aside from the obvious, the cheeky nature of the name also parodies the acclaimed distribution company Janus Films right down to the logo:

Bad Seed Returns. 2022.
Very competently made. But this is sadly a movie solely interested in showing us a successful psychopath that gets away with everything she does without any setbacks whatsoever. It worked in the first movie, but second time around it is repetitive. The ending is almost precisely the same. Personal advice is not to bother. Talk about having a boner for your own villain.
1 survivor out of 5. Literally.

Blum says he wants to make films but has no ideas for them; Wan has more ideas than he knows what to do with or handle.
Possibility to double Blumhouse's release content to eight or so a year with additional output on Peacock.

But maybe I'm behind the times.
I call it the Rear View.
