Im having a debate with a guy right now on youtube. He commented on the vid of Cena rap battling a "fan" (Ken Doane) saying I responded... To the very classy retort: And then I replied... And then HE replied... (this is getting kinda long) So yeah, thats what we're up against. You should point out all the times the wwe themselves have mentioned it's staged. For example all the DVDs(and sometimes segments on raw) with interviews talking about the storylines and developing characters. Or special segments(such as Owen hart and Eddie Guerrero tributes) where enemy wrestlers stand right next to each other. Although I'm sure he'll use some convoluted logic to make himself not sound stupid.

I've never liked the term "fake" used in the context of pro wrestling. It's never sat well with me.

I've never liked the term "fake" used in the context of pro wrestling. It's never sat well with me. "Fake" implies Blood Packets, Breakaways, and some other gimmickry......the correct term is "Staged". The Matches and spots are (Usually) Pre-Determined, but everything happening physically any way Is really happening. "Fake" is the "Catching a Bullet" magic trick. Nobody is ever in any real danger and physically nobody really runs the risk of being shot. "Staged" is knowing that in 5 seconds Stone Cold is going to hit you with a steel chair, it's going to hurt, and bracing yourself. Or that you HAVE to land a certain way off of this move or you will Die/Be hurt/Not get up In "Fake" there's no need for trust.....because it's all based on how well your gimmick works. "Staged" requires 2 (or More) people to trust each other explicitly, to be able to say when you fall, I'll make sure you not only don't get hurt.....you look good doing it.

Absolutely amazed at this point that there are still people who think the mat is like a pillow, all the weapons are made of foam, and the blood is all capsules or ketchup packets. Jesus, the internet, people-this should be common knowledge to everyone over the age of 5 now. Like many bs things people believe, someone told them it was fake in every sense of the word and they never thought it was important enough or worth their time enough to do five minutes of research and find out what it was really like. Then there are people who will always fool themselves, no matter how many ladder matches or hardcore matches you show them, they will insist that it doesn't actually hurt. I had a friend who I was showing some matches from ECW and they kept saying "Yea, but how do they keep from getting injured? That's what I don't understand." They don't you lunkhead. They try to avoid it, but no matter what your'e doing you're going to get beat up and it's going to hurt. No matter how many times I said this to him-"Yes that blood is real. Yes those are really thumb tacks. Yes he is really getting hit with a flaming club and it is dangerous." He just couldn't bring himself to believe it. And of course, because the endings are scripted, they claim it's impossible to enjoy--not understanding that it is the underlying athleticism and well-told story between established characters that you are supposed to enjoy. /sigh

to them I give two replies...
"There's two things you cannot 'fake' - Athleticism and gravity"
and
"you like [insert their favorite show here], right? They don't really [whatever the plot of the show happens to be]"
That gets a lot of them.
Stump them by just saying flatly, "I know."

Alright, after reading this thread, I just need to ask, am I the only who wouldnt give a shit if there was in fact no risk to wrestling what-so-ever?
I'm not impressed by the fact the chairs are actually real, I dont care if the wrestlers could genuinely kick my ass, I'm actually not really comfortable knowing that one false move could have one of my favourite guys ending up like Drozdov.
Wrestling is needly dangerous as it is, the last thing it needs is "WELL WHY YOU TAKE AN IRISH WHIP AND SEE IF YOU CAN SURVIVE!1" as a retort to any criticism against it.

This post will probably end up being more context than the actual point but here it goes. For months I lived with my friend in a house technically owned by his mother but she only occasionally visited it since she has a home in Florida. We didn't get along at all the few times she visited and eventually she told my friend to kick me out. She left me a little note calling me an ass and various things the last time she visited before I had to move out, so I ended up writing her a respectful letter explaining some things ect ect whatever. The point is she recently finally wrote me back. She explained most of her complaints. Many of them were legitimate in fact I'd say besides and maybe one other thing she had some damn good points and some damn good advice and I plan to write her back with some level of gratitude. But anyway the point of this post is to post this excerpt Obnoxious? Fine. Michael Cole is the lead announcer on both major WWE programs now! But offensive? In the PG era especially? I just don't understand how intelligent together people can come to have such an irrational hatred for a certain type of entertainment like that. My mom and dad both have that same perspective on it so ever since I started watching four years ago its been a lot of bullshit. Both of them originally banned me from watching it in their households. I've softened both of them to it and even got my dad to go the Worcester RAW with me and I've managed to get my mom to respect the athletic element and such. I just wish people could get to the point where people could see wrestling as just like any other scripted TV show. I really do.

I think a number of people here are in a bit of a denial. WWE and all the other wrestling promotions did indeed try to keep kayfabe for years even outside of wrestling shows.
There is a video on YouTube of Lou Albano and Roddy Piper swearing up and down on a news show that professional wrestling is real even after the WWE officially stated it wasn't as a means to avoid some kind of tax or fee. And yes a lot of fans, including grown adults believed it was real for years as well.
It is THIS I believe that a lot of these "wrestling is fake" people are talking about ultimately. Sure, kayfabe died more or less in the 90s with the advent of the internet and WWE and other companies regularly break kayfabe on DVDs and other interviews they do in the media but these "wrestling is fake" people are idiots. They like to think that your average wrestling fan is still like your average wrestling fan from the 80s on back so they can fake fun of us.
I think both sides are guilty here. Fans want to deny this history (a lot of times they personally believed it was real at some point in the past) and the haters want to deny the modern view of professional wrestling by it's fans.

Debating anyone on youtube is usually unwise. They will bring you to their level and hammer you with their experience.
An issue with chairs and tables though, theoretically, it's probably best for things like tables and chairs to be somewhat worked, or at least worked by the people throwing them. Tables normally have a cut in them so they can break easily (non-Japanese tables anyway). And of course, when guys throw chair shots, you're not supposed to full on blast them in the head with a chair. That's ridiculous. And it's a shame that good workers are condemned, like at Hardcore Justice when Raven hit Tommy Dreamer with head chair shots (I think they told a good story where the finish came after a head chair shot. Triple H and Undertaker getting fined for their head chair shot at Wrestlemania. It certainly added to the match, it wasn't just a chair shot for the sake of it, Taker got his hand up and Triple H is a good worker.
But yeah, I just laugh them off. People will always be ilke that. Or just respond, oh yeah, just like your girlfriend's orgasms. Now if she was with me, they would all be real. Which someone already said similarly. Way to read on my part I guess, haha.
Also, wrestling can at times be offensive. When Kelly Kelly wrestles, it offends me big time as a fan, that they are insulting me in thinking that this person is actually capable of belonging there.

A wrestling episode of the Twilight Zone with the swerve being that wrestling is the one real thing in the world would be fun.
As for people that call it fake, I usually come back with extreme sarcasm and a Simpson's quote: "It is? I don't believe in anything anymore, I'm going to law school."
