I got into wrestling around 1989 when we didn't have satellite yet, so me and my bro grew up watching nwa/wcw before wwf.... where sting was the "hulk hogan" to us. top stars were ric flair, 4 horsemen (with sid), steiners, jack and abdullar and lex turning heel. - i do miss it.

It was a combination of Surfer Sting and Crow Sting that got me into wrestling as a kid. Always was and always will be my favorite. As for the pics, loved em all and I think the one with Robocop is my favorite.

I never watched WCW pefore Crow-era Sting... why is this incarnation known as Surfer Sting? Did he carry a surfboard, use surfing terminology, etc? Or just because he had bleached blonde hair? And was it ever formally announced to be his name? i.e. did the banner read 'surfer sting' when he came to the ring? He did carry a surfboard with him to the ring on at least one occasion, I know there's a picture of it online but I can't find it at the moment. It was the blonde hair, the Venice Beach hometown and all that led to the surfer connotation. He was always just known as 'Sting' but calling him 'Surfer Sting' is an easier way to distinguish the gimmick from 'Crow Sting'. Yes, plus they'd play videos of Sting and he'd be working out on the beach, or just kickin' back enjoying the sun and sand. And he always wore a bodysuit at the beach, like the dedicated surfers would I think WCW Magazine called him "Sting: California Cool" one time. Back then, when you thought of California, you'd think surfing. (Surfing was pretty big in the late '80s; even if you were a "poseur" you owned at least one Body Glove, Billabong or Quiksilver shirt or shorts.)
