If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Brock Lesnar becoming pretty unpopular amongst the IWC from about mid-2003 until he left in 2004? I belonged to a different wrestling forum back then, but I don't remember much about the general attitude towards him around that time.
Also, didn't he begin making enemies in the SD! lockerroom, as well? It keeps coming back to me that he said (legit) that he would "kick the entire lockerroom's a$$" or something like that..
Does anyone remember this time period? Was he becoming SD!'s Triple H towards the end? I'm getting old, so I forget stuff...thanks!

As far as I can recall, there was a lot of excitement about the rumors of him being called up post WM X-8. IWC liked him in '02, and because of his ability to have amazing matches with Angle without being carried, he was a golden boy. But we all completely soured on him (rightfully so) in the two weeks before WM20 when he announced he was leaving.
His ego was an issue, yes, and I think there was an issue when he got with Sable and she was brought back because of that. But ultimately, his ability to work an amazing match overrode all gripes.

Apparently, the "kick everyone's ass" speech was a misguided attempt to be a locker-room leader. Yes, he was a top guy but the combination of his lack of experience and the fact that he was sort of distanced from the locker-room already made the speech come off as a joke, accorind got Interweb reports.

Apparently, Brock made that speech in early 2004 when Vince was concerned about wrestlers backstage leaking locker room information to online sites. Brock felt the initiative to take charge and threaten anyone in the locker room leaking info which made him look like a joke as previously mentioned.
This was like two weeks before he announced he was leaving the company to play for the NFL. This guy was a mess.

I recall the ICW loving him until WM20, but not liking that the WWE would only put him against other monster guys. At the time Rey was among the hottest he'd ever been with his career and there was a lot of hints that the WWE was going to eventually do the first ever entertaining and believable big-man little-man feud with great matches between them that never materialized for big show match after undertaker match.
I also recall, while Benoit was beloved then too, people dreading their matches together because of their styles not meshing.

I also recall, while Benoit was beloved then too, people dreading their matches together because of their styles not meshing. I remember being excited about the idea of Benoit vs. Lesnar at Wrestlemania. I remember being pretty sure that Benoit was going to win the Rumble, and didn't know they were going to be doing the Lesnar/Goldberg feud. I know Benoit and Lesnar fought on Smackdown at least once, but I never saw the match. Anyway, I seem to remember Brock getting talked about positively usually, but he wasn't an IWC darling like Benoit, Angle, Rey, etc. Then again, I didn't go to wrestling forums back then, I just read a lot of online columns. Also, despite the fact that I read spoilers, newz, and columns on a daily basis, I didn't know Brock was leaving after WM 20. I knew Goldberg was, but not Brock. Didn't find that out until the day after WM 20.

I think it was sort of 50/50 with Brock back then...at least with a lot of the IWC crowd I fell in with. Half of them thought he was an egotistical prick even though he could put on a hell of a match and don't miss him...the other half has been begging for him to come back ever since. You can lump me in with the former.
I think/thought he was/is a hell of a talent, but his ego limits him...but Vince and Co. helped that beast grow. I mean, how could his head not grow when he was the youngest WWE Champion ever, main evented Wrestlemania quickly and was fed the Rock, Taker and almost Stone Cold?

People loved the Brock/Benoit match on Smackdown (mainly because it was a damn good match), and were looking forward to the Wrestlemania rematch at the time. People kind of turned on Brock as a face towards the end, because he wasn't coming out all that great with his mic work really. When he turned heel again against Angle, people started being okay with him again especially when he murdered Zack Gowen twice.

Prior to that, while they crossed at house-shows in 2003 and people liked how it sounded on paper, they had less than great showings at houseshows. That's reportedly why a lot of the Brock vs. Benoit matches were changed to three-way-dances with Kurt.

I was a fan of him from day one. Loved it. Saw one of his first non televised matches with Raven at a house show. Always wanted him to come back.
