Sure he could have. But I doubt it would've been as successful as it was with Hogan as the leader.

Sting turning heel would have been big-he was the perenial hero character. But Hogan just plain worked better for the time-he needed the change. Hogan had worn out his welcome as a face, and turning heel gave him a fresh coat of paint. Fans were still huge for Sting as a face, so turning him heel would been shocking, but it would not have worked out as well in the end.

Not in 1996 it had to be Hogan or Bret for it to work I think. Bret was huge at the time and Hogan is Hogan. I think nWo 2000 would of been cool if lead by Sting. Sting and The Outsiders going up against Hogan, Flair and someone younger like Booker or Bagwell. See, I honestly believe it only get's as big as it did with Hogan at the helm. Bret may have brought in initial, curious eyes, but never would've gotten the mainstream attention as Hogan leading the nWo did. Sting wouldn't have worked either, because nobody outside of wrestling knew who he was. Hogan was world famous already, and he brought in people who didn't really care about wrestling, but knew who Hogan was. Truly a once in a lifetime opportunity IMO.

It would not have worked if Sting was the third man. He did not have Hogan's charisma and brand name, nor his mic skills either. Come to think of it he didn't have the look either. The NWO was suppose to be similar to an outlaw motorcycle club. Sting doesn't have that look or attitude. Hogan turning heel turned Sting into a bigger star as well.

I doubt it. He was the symbol of resistence against them. What should have happened is that Sting should have handed Hogan a 15 minute squash match at Starrcade, with Hogan getting in little or no offence, the submitting in the SDL. Sting would then declare that WCW was going on the offensive against the NWO, using NWO-style tactics (gang beatdowns) against them, until eventually the NWO was crushed entirely. The remaining NWO members would then gradually be phased into the new and improved WCW.

As already stated could he have? Yes.
Would the NWO have taken off and been the powerhouse it was? Probably not.
