The other major film(besides Django Unchained) opening tomorrow, currently holding a 76% RT rating after 100+ reviews is Les Misérables, a film adaptation of the Broadway musical. I plan on seeing it tomorrow, as well.

Saw it tonight. Lots of close ups but for the most part it didn't brother me too much. I loved it for the most part. I cried a lot. I remember seeing it on stage and there were some parts during the movie that I cried that I didn't when I watached it on the stage and then there was a moment that made me cry on stage that didn't in the movie.

Just got back from seeing it. Holy shit, it was so good. I thought the direction was really good, really enjoyed the closeups, honestly. It made I Dreamed A Dream SOOOO intense.
Seriously, loved the hell out of it.

Saw it yesterday in a PACKED theater, before this, all I had seen of the show was Nostalgia Chick's review of the show from a few years back that ended with a lot of TGWTG contributes singing One Day More and the 25th anniversary concert that I saw a few days ago on YouTube.
Absolutely loved it. I admit to crying during the movie more than once, and looking at other people as we were filing out of the theater, I was not alone.
I was a bit disappointed with the movie's version of Beggars At The Feast. I think the change they made was to downplay the fact the Thénardier family, arguably the true villains of the tale ended up the best of any of the characters.
I really want to see it again.

In a word, uneven. Not like Pierce Bronson in Mamma Mia, but he was clearly outclassed by Hugh Jackman during their musical duets.
He did have some moments that shined through, though.

How was Crowe's version of Stars? That's where I think Javert really shines and it can solidify a great performance. I LOVE Phil Quast's and Norm Lewis' versions of the song. I think the only actor I'm really worried about is Amanda Seyfried as Cosette. I've never heard her sing. But the casting has been fantastic otherwise and I know she was in Mamma Mia, so it's probably good.

I thought Crowe's singing on Stars was good enough to get the message across, but like I said, my only other reference was the 25th anniversary concert, and that Javert was better. I was a bigger fan of Crowe's acting than his singing, especially in the aftermath of the failed revolution.
I found myself a tad disappointed with Amanda Seyfried's Cosette. Not really with her performances, per se, but more with how the Cosette was more of a plot device than a true character. It seemed to be a waste of Amanda Seyfried's talents, IMO.
Thénardier's inability to ever remember Cosette's name was an amusing running gag.

Went to it Christmas day with friends. Was hoping to see Django Unchained, but that's not what the friends wanted to see.
I thought it was a very good film adaptation of Les Mis. Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway were great. I thought Russel Crowe's acting was fine, but at times his singing didn't capture the power and beauty of the songs. I couldn't help but notice a shot from Vertigo was recreated a bit. The crowd at my theater seemed very enthusiastic about it.
I was familiar with the musical, having seen a video of an early production of the musical in college and I was very familiar with this music.

In a word: amazing.
As a BIG fan of the musical, I knew a Hollywood version could not possibly match something that had be going to the theater four times (twice in one day my first time seeing it) to see it. And I was going in nervous about Russell Crowe's singing, especially since Javert is NOT a small role.
So all that being said, I walked out proclaiming it the best movie of the year. Not kidding. I was honestly afraid it was going to play as a best of Les Mis with only the big songs left in and the minors cut out. Gotta give the producers credit with the opening, they left me in suspense with the music until the first notes of "Look Down" hit, then I knew we were in safe hands.
I'm actually amazed as much of the musical was preserved as it was. Only a few reprises and "Dog Eat Dog" got cut and we only lost "Dog" because the producers were trying to turn villains into comic relief, successfully I might add. Crowe... sufficed. He was clearly not going to be able to hit the notes the way a Phillip Quast could have, but we all knew that. That he did as well as he did was impressive.
The big surprise of the movie? Eponine. Damn, what a set of pipes on that girl! Seriously, wish she was getting talked up as much as Anne Hathaway because she's really good. As for the rest, goes without saying. Hathaway is brilliant and should get an Oscar nom, if not a win. Mark this day as the only time I'm ever likely to see Sasha Baron Cohen in a movie since I normally cannot stand the guy. And of course, Hugh Jackman is very credible as Valjean.
Overall? Best movie of the year, like I said, and I can honestly see this movie upsetting Lincoln for best picture.

Amazing film, it was my first time seeing the show in any capacity.
I wasn't the only one that thought Marius sounded really froggy though, was I?

Crowe... sufficed. He was clearly not going to be able to hit the notes the way a Phillip Quast could have, but we all knew that. That he did as well as he did was impressive. That's been the only fly in the ointment for me, as someone who's yet to see it; the reviews of Russell Crowe as the weak link. Javert is such a big part of the philosophical argument in this story... it's a real disappointment to hear that Crowe didn't really do the part justice. That's no reason not to see it, and I will at some point, but it does kind of take the shine off of it a little for me. Like you said, not everyone's gonna be Quast, and I'm sure his acting is great. It's just a shame to hear that Javert of all roles is the least well-realized one.
