What will be the next big thing in technology?

Currently touch screen based devices like smartphones and tablets are all the rage but I've been wondering what will come next?

I've been hearing a lot of people talk about AR glasses, and seeing AR glasses used in both Heavy Rain and Ready Player One(great book so far, btw), it seems like AR glasses/visors with haptic feedback gloves might be the next thing, at the very least it seems to be the front runner. So what do you think?

Personally I kind of hope it isn't AR glasses because unless they also design ones for folks with eyeglasses like myself, I can't see how we'd be able to wear the bloody things. Unless they managed to combine the two, like prescription AR glasses with corrective lenses built in.

As for as overall technology, it moves so fast that I honestly couldn't even wager a prediction.

But as for video games, I'd love to see virtual reality become a... reality. We're already halfway there with things like the Kinect, but I think that (assuming they could make it affordable, which will take years in it of itself) virtual reality is the next big thing in the world of video games.

Virtual reality would be theoretically possible with AR technology.

You'd need some form of eye wear at the least.

I think we're going to see a revolution in TV, whether its from Apple or someone else. I think Tim Cook is right in that it's lagging behind other technology.

It is lagging behind other technology, but imo, TV isn't something that "needs" to be advanced.

Well, many companies have 4k tvs heading out, which is double the current resolution. add in glasses free 3d and that could be the next step, but I think the tv manufacturers ruined the 3d goodwill at this point.

A few companies are basically working what is basically a holo deck. Sony has a 3d 360 degree 3d projector already running. Add Kinect to that and bam.

I think something with goofy hardware like glasses won't become ubiquitous the way touch-technology has. I think Not Zombie Mod and AFN are on the right track with the holograms.

See I just don't buy into holograms. It is like flying cars to me, one of the dream technology used in basically all sci-fi that it is now a pillar of the genre, but the implementation of holograms is unwieldy. I mean with for example the 360 degree 3D display from Sony would basically require you to have an entire room dedicated to it. That alone makes it impractical in all of Japan, for example, and the vast majority of American homes and hell homes all across the world. Something like glasses you'd just have to wear, glasses based technology has the potential to be more ubiquitous than holograms do.

I dont think we will be seeing things like holograms etc. in the home for a while yet.

e-ink and flexi-touch stuff seem to be the big thing for 2013/14/15

I don't know about that. For TV's sake they need to evolve or be left behind for tablets, PCs and laptops as Internet access grows and tech advances. It's becoming an area where people want and are starting to expect to do more whether its Twitter, Facebook, Fantasy Sports, live stats/news updates or stuff like that. Most everyone has some sort of set top box nowadays whether Roku, Boxee, TiVo or something from their cable/sat or just their laptop but nothing has all of it together and I think that will be the next advancement. It's gonna be combining web surfing, "casual" gaming, social media stuff, stuff like Hulu or Netflix and traditional media outlets in an easy to use package. It will be something where you are watching Walking Dead live on AMC through a cable or sat provider and you pull up a second screen on TV with the Walking Dead's Twitter feed or your feed where you post and follow along as the show goes on. Same for sporting events or instead of Twitter you get a rundown of fantasy stuff or other stats, watch the news and the second screen gives you a deep run down of the story while the TV report is just the basics.

It's all stuff that can be done using various devices but I am talking an all in one device that is user friendly and works with cable/sat providers and TV networks like we saw with the explosion of smart phones and wireless carriers. Obviously its going to be something not everyone wants so it could be something they could turn off or just not buy.

Probably an intensification of the elimination of physical and/or removable media. I'd be surprised if game consoles or PCs as we know them today will exist at all 20 years from now. With screen/media interface convergence (your phone, for instance, will be your TV, computer, and console all in one), wireless computing and content delivery, and cloud-storage of data, the material media ecology of today will be a relic of the past. Mind you, the further we advance technologically, the shorter the obsolescence of technological lifespan becomes. You'll probably end up buying iPhone 19 and 20 in the same calendar year, most likely, and because of that, you'll lose information and media twice as fast because of how instantaneous communication has become.
