A 50-year-old Nebraska man is accused of assaulting his new wife with a meat sandwich.
Larry Spurling pleaded no contest in Scotts Bluff County Court Monday to disturbing the peace in the alleged food fight Sunday night, local news reported.
The man’s wife, Tammy Spurling, called 911 at around 10 p.m. Sunday to inform police that he had pushed her down and smeared the sandwich in her face.
Before the emergency call, Spurling had allegedly become “irate after he blamed her for making him live in the country and being bored since there is no place for him to walk,” according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Daily News.
During the lengthy argument, Spurling drank three 24-ounce cans of “Natty Daddy,” a malt liquor with an 8-percent alcohol content.
Tiring of the fight, the woman — who said she married Spurling in June 2012 — made a sandwich and went into the bedroom of their trailer home.
But her husband followed her there, continuing the fight. Things soon got physical, with both husband and wife pushing and shoving each other.
“During the altercation between Mr. Spurling and his wife, Mr. Spurling pulled Ms. Spurling’s hair, pushed her down onto the bed, took the sandwich and began rubbing it into Ms. Spurling’s face,” the affidavit says.
Although records do not give specifics on just what exactly was in the sandwich, Spurling’s wife said she got mayonnaise stains on her shirt, face and hair.
Police were “not able to see any mayonnaise on Ms. Spurling’s face or hair,” which she said she washed off before their arrival.
The reporting officer did, however, say he found a few pieces of meat outside the bedroom and some slices of bread inside.
After several searches, officers found Sterling, who was face-down in the grass, about 10 feet from the trailer. At the time, he said it was actually his wife who had assaulted him.
Frances Zarasua, a witness who lives in the Spurling’s residence, told police that the couple has a history of fighting and that Spurling’s wife “is usually the aggressor and that Mr. Spurling does not do anything.”
But the wife — who said she has “had enough” of her marriage and will pursue a divorce —said Zarasua “is ‘madly in love’ with [Spurling] and that she ‘will stick up for him.’”
Spurling was sentenced Monday to five days in jail.
