After months of taping up his belly while wrestling, Joe has given up and is now wrestling in a t-shirt. Remember when people made fun of Samoa Joe for being fat. Joe just didn't have the superstar look. Joe from 2005 and 2006 looks like a friggin supermodel compared to nowadays. And now Joe, fatter then ever, is wrestling in a t-shirt. Oh Scott Steiner, has your many taunts of Joe made him so depressed that he doesn't care anymore. Oh, so he's wrestled his last few matches in a t-shirt then?

Seems as if Sting has a new compatriot in the Out of Shape Shirt Wearing Wrestlers Club. Don't forget Anderson. Maybe its a TNA rule. Didn't Spike force Flair to wear a shirt when he wrestled? Maybe they have a saggy physique policy.

No, he's wrestled with a tape around his belly. I guess my critique is Joe gained a ton of weight in recent years, moreso then ever and he's not looking as good as he used to be.

Joe is stuck in a Catch 22 situation. His injuries are bring on his weight gain and his weight gain is causing his injuries to mount up. Best thing for him is to take time off to heal from his injuries and see would Jenny Craig will sponsor him in losing weight.
But last night, it was the first time he wrestled with the basic Impact Wrestling t-shirt. That's going into Tommy Dreamer territory.

What's certainly true is that around the time Joe was diagnosed with sciatica was when his weight seemed to visibly go up: dude's always been getting bigger (seems like a common Samoan trait), but sciatica REALLY limits what you're capable of when working out. Certainly not a fun thing to deal with, as I've seen with people like my own father.

People bitch about the bodybuilder types getting more chances and how they cannot work but when a Rey, Joe, Punk, Bully Ray or Hero show up and do great those same people turn around and bitch about them not being in cookie cutter shape and call them fatasses or say they obviously don't give a damn because they either got older/injured and put on weight or or are in the best shape of their careers but its not good enough.

It's not just looks, though. It makes fans worry about his health for one, and secondly, wonder how much he could do if he could only lose some of the bulk. Mick Foley says it himself in Foley is Good, that he wonders how many of his good matches could have become great, or his great matches become classics, if he had been better able to battle weight gain. I know it's none of our business, but I have to hope he doesn't have such regrets himself.

Believe me, I agree: Joe's been my favorite wrestler going since around 2004. That said, when a guy can't train like he wants to, it can have an adverse effect on what types of matches he can perform in. While Joe's certainly been back on the rise over the past year (especially compared to the dumps Russo was booking him into), he still hasn't wrestled many matches that have gone to 20 minutes, something Joe used to do with high regularity. Some of that has been the limits of the format, as you can't book too many 10+ minute matches in Impact and how most companies like to save their 20-30 minute matches for main event slots, but still, Joe has been somewhat limited. To his credit, he's still been putting on some very good matches since this past summer despite any such limitations (vs. Aries, vs. Magnus, Hardcore Justice Ladder match, vs. Hardy, etc.). If he's back on his regular training regime, that's fantastic news, because it's high time he take his rightful spot back near the top of the card more regularly.

I didn't know about the health issues and that's how Raven started getting bigger in 2006. I guess that Joe does need the time off, because his work has been effected. Though it's not hard to lose passion in TNA.

I know it's none of our business, but I have to hope he doesn't have such regrets himself. It IS just looks though. No one talks about their health and I doubt guys like Punk or Rey are really in danger because they aren't sculpted, nor do they talk about Ray or Joe needing to lose weight to avoid injuries or anything like that. Every time it's brought up, they are compared to people who are younger (or their younger self), have less time in wrestling or ignore injuries. The in ring stuff doesn't hold weight either, IMO because, they are all in great shape and can still put on great performances and have, the just are toned with rippling muscles or a 6 pack so people rag on them. They are comparing these guys to their younger self and blaming changes in their ring work to getting "out of shape" instead of getting older or being in WWE/TNA instead of the indies or WCW. Like I said earlier, Joe just got cleared to go back to training after a year or more of being told not to but he still wrestled and had great tag matches and several great singles matches. Same of Punk and Rey before missing a year to finally get his knees fixed, Ray still brawls with the best of them like he's done for decades. I don't remember Dusty being a Greek god when he tearing it down with Flair and Big Show has had several great matches this year and he's at his biggest size in 6 years. FCW/NXT still gets called a cloning factory despite that not being true for years and when people point that out, people go with the current crop never making it because they don't have that cloned look or if someone had a weird or distinct look to them, they are dismissed and made fun of. When it's mentioned that WWE or TNA are looking at a Sami, El Generico, Steen, Sara Del Rey, Portia or damn near anyone in Chikara they are still too thin, too fat, or don't have that wrestler/Diva/KO look, despite the success of Foley, Punk, Daniel Bryan, AJ Lee, Beth Phoenix or others.

You are mistaking my point. I am talking specifically about Joe. CM Punk, for instance, is not 50+ pounds overweight. Samoa Joe is.

Samoa Joe was fine a few years ago. He was tanned, in shape, could go awhile. There's nothing wrong with having a different physique. Personally, I feel Tensai is pretty good in the ring, for a guy his size. Speaking of Mick Foley, he made sure to lose a ton of weight for his match with Randy Orton at the Backlash 2004 pay per view. He was a bit skinnier, but he wasn't a greek god as you talked about. But, it was still a classic match. Mick tried. With Joe, he must have gained 40 or 50 pounds since his glory days when he was arguably the biggest draw in TNA history. It's not about Joe not having a cookie cutter look, it seems he's out of shape of what Joe once was. I don't think Joe is ever going to get a 6 pack, but compare Joe from Bound for Glory 2006 to now. He's out of shape, and he's gotten worse in recent years. Tomko gained a bit of weight when he came back, it wasn't dramatic, but his ring work suffered for it, and he wasn't the guy he was when "Tomko was for Tomko".

Know what? Since Joe is doing his best in-ring work since 2008, I can't even be upset about him wearing a shirt.

He's not even fat as hell, or even Samoan bulky. There's far fatter people in wrestling. Not sure why he has always seemed like he was ashamed of it. His best friends in wrestling have been guys in much better shape than him. Maybe it gets to him, being "the fat one". Barely, though. Punk and Colt aren't exactly ripped themselves. Not to mention, the way Joe moves, he could blow most supposedly fitter guys out the water.
