When you think of what NXT was (a reality show!) to what it became (a comedy show!) to what it actually is now (genuinely the best example of wrestling on television), it's pretty staggering.
The entire premise of the show makes sense. It's a developmental ground for new talent to hone their craft and make a name for themselves. It's not just full of lower-card wrestlers and jobbers from Raw and Smackdown, (although they do show up too), it's full of guys no-one has heard about until now.
Everyone matters. Everyone is talked about by the commentators, everyone is made to sound like a big deal and a potential future star.
There's promo time and interview time, but the main focus is in-ring action. Matches matter, the guys are given time to show off what they can do.
The crowd are amazing. They eat up everything that goes on. Hell, they even chant "NXT" at the start of the show. Compare that to the bored assholes sitting on their hands or shouting "WHAT?" on the previous NXT seasons.
They've given authority roles to guys like Dusty Rhodes, who is, ahem, a Natural at it, and William Regal and JR on commentary is a pleasure to listen to.
The title is the main focus of the show. It's a new strap but they have made it matter, way more than the IC and US belts.
There are more characters and personalities instead of smiling, bland babyfaces, from sinister wackjobs like Bray Wyatt and Leo Kruger, Undertaker style "supernatural" figures like the Ascension, as well as interesting figures like Kassius Ohno and Corey Graves and bad-asses like Bronson and Big E Langston.
Why Raw and Smackdown, and even TNA, haven't tried to follow this blueprint when it comes to making their shows is beyond me. Because right now NXT is - easily - the best wrestling show on TV.

It was better as Redemption. this x 1000000 I really don't understand all the love the new NXT gets, considering its meant to be developing talent ready for the main roster it does a really poor job, there needs to be shennanigans and absurdities, it's far too basic.

It was better as Redemption. I wish they'd kept both as seperate NXT brands. NXT basic, and NXT redemption. Even though NXT Redemption is technically the original one. But if we can overlook the WWE tag titles being the made up titles and the World heavyweight tag titles being the original ones, I'm sure we could over look this. I like how, even though the show was taped at the same arena, at the same night as Smackdown (and sometimes Raw), the crew seemed to be really tight for some reason. When it ended, Kaitlyn started #yellowropesforever and mentioned everyone (except Maxine).

NXT doesn't have to worry about Nielsen Ratings since they don't broadcast on American television. Nuff said.

It's not charmed me as much as it seems to most other people. Yes, the wrestling is good and the roster is pretty impressive. But, even though it's probably blasphemous to say it on the internet, I like my wrestling big and showy rather than small and intimate. So NXT isn't something that excites me hugely. I do quite enjoy it but I'm not entirely bowled over by it.

I'm not talking about myself, I'm not really interested in NXT same as I wasn't interested in it when it was called FCW and praised on the internet just as much. It would be really awkward if they assumed the typical Raw viewer kept up to date on the happenings of NXT, and disorienting to the probably 90% of viewers if they just assumed that you watched NXT and knew who these people were. The idea of an extended continuity is interesting to me, like if they showed clips from NXT as part of their debut or something, to try to promote the show and the sense of a greater narrative beyond Raw/PPV/SD/ME/SMS.

NXT, since it's inception, has been something of an experimental ground for WWE. They were doing worked-shoot kind of stuff before Punk ever did with Daniel Bryan and Michael Cole, and the acknowledgement that winning can be secondary to style points or the "it" factor. Later they had the Dirty Curty/Maxine stuff which was completely different from anything they've done on TV in a long time, and other insanely off the wall storylines, just pushing the envelope of what a wrestling angle can be in an absurd direction. Now, it's this really focused, small-scale thing with up-and-coming talent that looks extremely promising, and some darker, more unique characters like Bray Wyatt, Ascension, Ohno, Graves etc.
Maybe that "NXT is the next evolution in sports entertainment" line Vince said wasn't so off after all.

Some people watch wrestling for wrestling, others watch it for the ridiculous over the top stuff. I'm of the latter group and thus preferred Redemption.

It was better as Redemption. Agreed! I like New!NXT but its to serious and sometimes gets boring, Redemption was fun and silly but still had great matches, and that is my favorite kind of wrestling.

It's a solid show, but it's way too bare bones for me, since I'm a story-whore above anything else.

I love NXT the way it is now. Some stories, basic stuff, and every match, even the squashes get good time. William Regal is a little rough on commentary, but you can tell he's legit trying to sell the wrestling aspect.
Also, interesting characters! Leo Kruger, Corey Graves, Kassius Ohno, Bo Dallas, and Seth Rollins are all awesome.
