Smithers from The Simpsons was the first to come to mind. If we're mentioning Simpsons, then Patty is openly gay.

fast forward to 12:50. he was defintiely shacking up with Peter. Look at the look he gives Simmons when he wants to go to the ballaet with Joy Can't believe how it balances being blatant and subtle. On a side note, was the uncle character supposed to a reference to south park?

You young'uns probably don't remember but Laff-A-Lympics had a gay announce team. Snagglepuss isn't even up for debate and as far as his partner Hokie Wolf goes I'd say any character voiced by Paul Lynde was ambiguously gay.

Not a show, but one of the characters from the kids movie ParaNorman was gay without stereotyping. That threw me off, Casey Afflecks character. has a one note joke about his boyfriend. I was wow, in a kid movie? brave. Dumbledore? Honestly, I highly doubt Rowlings meant him to be gay from the get-go. The fact that it was only announced after the last book was published and that it is in no way a part of his characterization in any of the works screams "publicity stunt" to me. So what I'm saying is that he's gay-for-pay. fast forward to 12:50. he was defintiely shacking up with Peter. Look at the look he gives Simmons when he wants to go to the ballaet with Joy Yeah, there's definitely something going on between them and Simmons is definitely the bottom. Also, this show is much funnier than I remember it being.

Maggie Sawyer on Superman: TAS, in one episode when she was in the hospital her girlfriend was with her.
And Batman: TAS made references of Poison Ivy and Harley being "close."
And not a kids show but Wally and Gus on Mission Hill.
Richie/Gear from "Static Shock" and Lexington from "Gargoyles" are both gay accoding to their creators.

The subtlety in that Hey Arnold thing is still not being openly gay.
No one says it, thus they are still not actually openly gay, however obvious it may appear.

Honestly, I highly doubt Rowlings meant him to be gay from the get-go. The fact that it was only announced after the last book was published and that it is in no way a part of his characterization in any of the works screams "publicity stunt" to me. So what I'm saying is that he's gay-for-pay. Big old WRONG on this one. Rowling had to specify to the movie producers that Dumbledore was gay, when they wanted to insert lines about a girl he once fancied. That was when they were making the sixth film. And I'd be truly interested to know how you think they should have changed his characterisation, given that he's an almost asexual figure for most of the books. Why should Rowling be to blame for the fact that people read characters as straight with zero evidence for it? Its weird to talk about sex in a kids movie. Acknowleding someone as gay would pretty much be talking about sex ... Really? In that case, they also have to remove any mothers and fathers from kids' films, because that means those characters DEFINITELY had sex. Out goes the Disney canon, which mostly revolve around the characters finding relationships. While we're at it, seeya, Minnie Mouse, can't have kids thinking about mouse sex. This is such a bizarre viewpoint. There's nothing intrinsically more sexual about a gay character than a straight one. Even if there was a full on gay romance, kids seem to be smarter than adults when it comes to this stuff. They wouldn't be thinking about sex, they'd realise that those people love each other. If you count Dr Who there's loads of examples, Captain Jack in particular doesn't even care what species* so gender is a non-issue. However the show is more family TV than kids TV. *as in aliens not sheep, although saying that he did set up Torchwood in Wales. Doctor Who is most definitely kids TV. It's "the children's own show that adults adore", to quote the old Target novels. And a bit closer to home than Jack's omnisexuality is Ianto's bisexuality, which is tackled really well in the books, dispelling a few myths. Since he appeared in Stolen Earth/Journey's End rather than just Torchwood, I feel I can mention him here! Oh, and Vastra/Jenny, of course.

Point of order, though- most times for kids' cartoons [particularly in the Disney cartoon shorts, they sold the child characters who hung around with Mickey/Donald/etc. as their nephews or nieces to a parent who was never seen specifically for that very reason. So it's kind of there already.
