Someone not named The Rock actually having a shot at the WWE Championship at a venue that's not the Royal Rumble?

It would be a huge mistake in my view. It would not surprise me if it ends up being Ryback v Heyman.
A possible option would be to have Big Show cost Ryback the match against Punk because he is a Heyman guy - then that sets it all up for Ryback winning the Rumble then shellshocking Big Show at Wrestlemania.
Rock v Punk I think needs the extra value of the 400+day title reign to make it an even bigger deal when Rock wins. Though I still hope Punk holds onto it until mania.

Can Ryback really win the WWE title on Monday?
Anything can happen in the World Wrestling Federation... Entertainment.

Pros - Makes people talk due to the unpredictability
- Makes Ryback into the dominant force that people see him as
- Makes Ryback into a bigger trophy for The Shield
- The Story of Cm Punk's one year plus long reign ends in the New Year
- It's Not Cena
Cons - Rock works best with people who have an ease when it comes to speaking on the mic. Ryback promos have been awkward laden with eating puns.
- More people would most likely want to see CM Punk have his comeuppance with the Rock than with Ryback
- The Story of Cm Punk's one year plus long reign ends in the New Year
- The Championship doesn't have the same meaning as Ryback simply looks to demolish his opponents rather than keeping and maintaining the title.
This seems to be the simplified consensus here. The talk of Ryback has also made me torn, but in the end I'd rather have "The Great One" vs. "The Best in the World."

Almost definitely not, but Rock v. Ryback would be pretty fascinating, both in the build-up and the match itself.
Punk's reign ending on TV would be great IMO, it'd add some excitement and craziness to that show. I mean we're so conditioned to have the major happenings occur only on PPVs, and for RAWs to be completely miss-able. It'd be great if they threw in occasional epic and unexpected moments on the TV show, get back some of that "anything can happen" feeling.
Ryback winning the title would be incredible, but the WWE will be more conservative here and do the obvious thing.

I wish.
I'm a huge fan of Ryback and I would love for him to win the WWE Championship. He's lost the last three PPV matches, so eventually if he keeps losing he's going to lose momentum. If they want to make Ryback into a big threat, big star he's going to have to A) win a Championship (either main event or midcard, or B) give him a big win over somebody. WWE needs to realize that guys like Ryback don't come around every so often.
So, if he does when the Royal Rumble he'll probably go for the World Championship for some reason even though he's been going for the WWE Championship and he wants to kill Punk.
Basically, The Rock is screwing everything up.

Nope.
The whole reason Punk has had the belt this long is because Rock so it wouldn't make any sense really. Rock himself would get pissed off at that.

Rock himself would get pissed off at that. Somehow, I REALLY doubt that.

It'd be great if they threw in occasional epic and unexpected moments on the TV show, get back some of that "anything can happen" feeling. We just did. Wade Barrett won the Intercontinental Title on Raw. Didn't you see the spoilers on WWE's site?

That's the reason I hated that Rock said he'd challenge for the title at the Rumble it made all of Punk's title matches since then real predictable and uninteresting.
Well, besides HIAC I actually did want Ryback to win then since he was undefeated but...yeah they went with that Maddox ending.

Simply put, WWE doesn't have the balls. They've already booked themselves into a corner by having Rock announce at Raw 1000 that he had a WWE Title match at the Royal Rumble. Add in Punk's long title reign and the fact that...like I said...WWE doesn't have the balls to end a long reign like that without making you pay to see it nor should they have to really. It'd be nothing but Hogan vs Goldberg again but on a lower level.
Ryback just suffered from Cena being injured and Vince losing his freaking mind and now he's going to suffer yet ANOTHER loss instead of slowly destroying the midcard like he was. I only see one acceptable finish to this match though. Forget Shield. Forget Show. Brock Lesnar must return to murder Ryback dead in the ring and demand a spot in the Royal Rumble.

It would be instantly idiotic because everyone wants to see Rock/Punk and having Punk drop the title to Ryback would just be a waste. However it is WWE so it would not shock me if they did pull the trigger.

Would be extremely foolish to do now with the Rock back, if they were going to do it should have been before they had Ryback come up short twice for the title and again in a tag match.
The whole reason they went this long with Punk as champ was to have the Punk vs Rock match they set up in late July so just stick to plans let Rock get his title win as part of coming back and then have Cena get his win back over him and win the title after a long time away from it and coming off a down year and then set up for a big money Rock vs Cena 3 to have in your back pocket in you need a big match later at SummerSlam or a future Mania.
