Skip Sheffield aside, I think Ryback is sort of filling in the role Miz took on a couple 'Manias back in a so-far almost minor way. A segway. Killing time till the Rock comes around. A kind of temporary monster, one I doubt has all that much longevity. Remember from the jobbers phase yawning through what seemed then an obvious Goldberg/RVD mesh. Heard him cut a promo, wasn't impressed. I think he was in the right place at the right time, advanced, and could definitely see him even by summer going the way of Tensai; it seems like it won't take much more than Rock or Brock getting back into the picture to make Ryback pale in comparison, and having this whole recent megapush seem pretty forced, it might be enough to leave him in the dust quicker than one might think.

I don't understand the whole "We know it's Skip Sheffield" mindset. That's like saying that we know Christian Bale played John Connor, Patrick Bateman, or that guy from Shaft even though he's Bruce Wayne in the Batman films. Ryback is a completely different character from anyone he's been in the past and you can't really hold him to his previous roles and say he's a failure because of who he once played. Ryback is a completely different character in the same movie, to draw from your analogy. Cena just a few days ago dished out a promo on Ziggler in which he reminds the viewers that Ziggler was a caddy, a cheerleader, changed his hair color, and changed the people he went out to the ring with. Now I'm in agreement with you in this respect, if the character is better, then I don't care who he was in the past if the character presently is an improvement. That's the problem with Cena's promo, and not to go too far into that since there is already a thread on it, but Ziggler is a better character now than he was then, he cuts decent to good promos from time to time, shows off his talents in the ring and is someone you can root for, meanwhile Cena is the same character he was, went through all the story arcs that his character went through, and I still don't give a damn about him, in some respects dislike him more. In Cena's case, he can never really change his character, he can only change his alignment. Now is Ryback a better character than Skip Sheffield? Absolutely he is. Does that mean that Ryback a good character? Not in my opinion, but I do laugh when he struts down the ramp for some reason, so he has that going for him. Do I care that he was Skip Sheffield? Not at all, but you don't ignore that for the sake of the programming, because the program itself will reference it without hesitation, just as Cena illustrated.

Yeah...I'm not seeing the guy disappearing so quickly.

Ryback isn't intimidating to me, I don't see a scary monster, all I see is a bald guy in a silly singlet on way too much growth

Ryback has zero ring skills, zero mic skills, zero chemistry with other wrestlers, and already claimed his first injury on Punk. I didn't think it was possible for me to want John Cena back in the WWE title hunt, but here you go. He's okay in the ring and his offense is actually pretty awesome. He's a monster and so he doesn't have to sell much, but he can sell if you saw him on NXT. His mic skills are also above "zero"- he has an intimidating as hell voice, and you can believe what he's saying. He's not going to be the type to go on a long 20 minute diatribe to open Raw, but he can give a convincing few minutes about why he wants to rip someone's head off. He also has a great look and presence can't really see this part even being debated. And he wasn't the one who injured Punk, that was only in kayfabe.

The Skip thing doesn't really apply. They're different characters. But it's not different characters in the same movie. It's more kinda like Chris Evans playing the Human Torch, then playing Captain America. Yeah, it's the same actor, but they're completely different characters; even if they are in the same 'universe' so to speak.*
* I know the Torch and Cap are in different cinematic companies, but you know what I mean.

I think the whole "Ryback was Skip!" thing isn't so much that we shouldn't let a performer move on from an old character... it's just that it's ridiculous for them to act like this guy inexplicably has some kind of special mystique, when we've seen Regal roll his eyes at him for being a redneck goofball, and all that changed was he got an even stupider name.
I think there's a trillion things wrong with his character and the way he's booked, and the Skip Sheffield thing is way low on the list. But the way they handled it was counterproductive.

Ryback is a specific type of character. Either you like that type or you don't. It all comes down to personal taste.

Ryback is his own thing and an actual character with a good look that stands out from the crowd. He FEELS like a main even guy already. Ok let me lay this out:
Unique look (that weird face, head shape, tooth situation)
Finisher AND Signature moves that are over and have good names. Instantly recognizable. Meathook clothesline even has a charge up like the Sweet Chin Music
Great catchphrase that is easy to chant
Actually a good worker with decent mic work
Gets a pop and wrecks s***. I mark when Feed Me More comes over the loudspeakers cause someone is gonna get wrecked. Also he's not invulnerable like monsters of the past. The Shield has kicked his ass plenty of times, but the dude doesn't back down.

I found of those three only Orton was ready back then...but Brock was being force fed to us and I feel the same way about Ryback.

Most people i talk to hate the guy and he is a horrible worker no question. He wont last long in the main event scene as he lacks the ability in the ring and has little to no charisma. He has a decent look, thats all but its fair to say more people hate him then like him.

Subsidies for Goldman Sachs Headquarters... a provision that allows US multinationals to not pay taxes on income earned by companies they own abroad... EVERY bill in good ol' Corporate States of America MUST have some Corporate Welfare! C'mon man make a thread, make a thread. All the cool posters are doing it. C'mon ya know ya wanna. Here is why I like Ryback, (clears throat, shuffles papers) Studies have concluded that Ryback is neither The Miz, John Cena, Sheamus, AJ Lee or Dolph Ziggler, and he is less annoying than these people. Thank you. OK, now that we have speciffics we can come up with a plan to help save Ryback. Here's what we do. First we get him a couple can's of spray on tan. "Helman's Best" or "Fish Belly Sexy" should. work Give him two-tone hair plastered to his head with industrial strength shelac. Different colored flourescent wrist bands with vague atributes like Apathy Fickleness and Dishonor (on sale @ WWE) every week. Put him on a reality show. And have him dress like a Catholic school girl. Also have him skip a lot (as an inside joke he can Skip Shuffle, Skip Shuffle). That should save his gimmick [/absurdity]

IWC: WWE don't make new stars anymore, and they don't push anyone. It's the same guys in the main event over and over again.
IWC: OMG Ryback sucks he's not ready he doesn't belong in the main event he's being pushed down our throats.
Way to go, guys!
