Here is the thing about the women and children first rule. Children are obvious because they are 'the future' or whatever. The women part is actually a rule from man who realized that men are stupid. He was the first one off and then proclaimed to save the women and children. Now, all of us men are dead and he is boning all the ladies. That man was Valeth Venis the First.

The reason for saving children is obvious. They are the most helpless and need assistance. With women it was probably a chivalry thing.

In more casual situations if someone says "Ladies first!" as an attempt to get something before me, I always ALWAYS respond with something like, "Well, I don't see any ladies here so...." or "Show me a lady and I'll let them go first."

We as a species evolved to put a higher priority on women's lives. It why women in danger trigger a hero response more often then men. It makes sense too, if three people survive and two are women one a man they can produce on average around two offspring a year, adding more males will not expand the amount of offspring but will cost more in survival resources. Therefore, keep the fewest males around to get day to day tasks done and send the rest to war, explore and other dangerous crap.
