He was pretty much the main character as far as development and story coverage. I mean you had Daddy Goku to save the day every couple of acts or so, but it seems like Toriyama wanted Gohan to be the star. Shame what they did to mah boy in GT.

Pretty much. That's why the end was SUPPOSED to be Gohan rising to the occasion and defeating Cell, as far as I know. Hell, I even doubt that Goku was supposed to be the one to beat Majin Buu, but in the end, that's what happened.

Pretty much was supposed to be father passing the torch to son.....but fan demand brought the almighty Goku back front and centre...thus the buu saga.
But of course just to appease Gohan fans , Gohan became the single strongest non fused warrior in all of Z but Goku still saves the day....so consolation prize lol

Yup, and it was pretty well done in a way that it was very subtle while you were watching the series for the first time. So by the time he turns SSJ2 and defeats Cell, you think back to the beginning and go "...holy shit, this was all leading to a payoff the entire time".
I've gone over plenty of times on why the Cell Saga was a perfect bookend to the series, so I'm not gonna go into detail once again. As far as I'm concerned, the Buu Saga was basically fanservice, albeit, with very few good-to-great moments (Majin Vegeta immediately comes to mind).

Ending the saga with Gohan finally accepting that he truly is the strongest finishing Buu off. Then GT was supposed to be Goten and Trunks

Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT are all about one person and one person only... Do ya think his moustache would glow if he went SSJ? Anyway, I really enjoyed when Gohan got "Unlocked" by Supreme Kai. Was so badass after that. Well, until Buu ate him.

Then GT was supposed to be Goten and TrunksBecause let's face it, that was more or less the logical step forward. Dragonball was about Goku and the introduction of the characters. Then Dragonball Z began the slow shift of responsibility from Goku to Gohan, so by GT, with Goku choosing to stay in the afterlife and Gohan more or less retiring to normalcy, Goten and Trunks should've been the stars - It makes sense that GT'd stand for Goten and Trunks. /rantover

His absorbtion, by the way, set up by him not being able to catch the other Potara earring. he can catch bullets in regular SSJ1, but an earring in his most powerful form pfffft.....don't be absurd.

My thinking is that I didn't mind Gohan losing his powers through slacking off over those 7 years, he's not a warrior at heart. Never has been. However, I wish he would have been much less of a dweeb. I mean, here's a guy who beat the most powerful villain in the franchise up to that point(Cell) and the only immortal villain in the franchise(Garlic Jr), but Videl absolutely terrifies him.
Seems legit.

Funny enough the first time I watched the Buu saga and Goku Tossed him the earing I immediately said "GOHAN IS GONNA f*** THIS UP"..and loe and behold he does. Because thats exactly who he is through out the show , unlike his father I think they always wanted that to be a defining trait for Gohan , that when the pressure becomes too much he screws it up , hell this was his personal train of thought while in the hyperbolic time chamber while becoming a SSJ.
