2012 was a year marked in football by the ref strike through the first 3 weeks- and of course, the flashpoint of flash points when the replacements botched the Green Bay/Seattle MNF ending.
But what are wrestling's biggest instances of refs completely screwing up a match? Not just screwing a guy, but where you felt "They can't control them" or "What did the ref just do?"
I know Maddox/Ryback is still fresh in our minds, but one of the bigger ones I recall- the two Hebners, Hogan/Andre 1988 NBC, The Main Event.
Let's just say if we had this board back then, we'd have reacted to that ending in a way similar to that Packer/Seahawks fiasco. It had a similar "He's doing something that never happened!" moment- Hogan getting a shoulder up at 1 but still counted down for 3 was the equivalent of the INT that never was which damn near melted down the Internet.

I believe there was one recently... the timed match with Big Show/Jericho and black ref screwed up the count.

The Matt Hardy/Mark Henry vs Miz/Morrison match on ECW. Also more than likely the Punk and Benoit vs. Burke and Cor Von match, just before Vengeance 2007. Match is of course overshadowed by what happened later, but basically it just randomly ended due to a DQ from I think it was Cor Von staying in the ring too long after tagging out. Just made no sense and you wound up getting this pointless brawl the faces came out on top of anyway.

Punk vs. Swagger from this time last year. Punk hits the elbow, covers, Swagger is supposed to kick out at two and then Punk immediately locks in the Vice. The ref, however, screwed up and counted three.
Incidentally, in kayfabe that was the reason Swagger got his US title match against Ryder.

Are we talking Kayfabe or not kayfabe? Obviously the two Hebners and Maddox are kayfabe. Refs screwing up are a different story.

Sable pinned Torrie Wilson at Vengeance 2003 for a 3 count in spite of the fact that Torrie's shoulder was very clearly not on the mat.

Rock/Angle at No Way Out...Hebner screwing up the finish. I always wondered about that. I was never sure until I reviewed the match so to speak. What gave it away was Rock seemingly re-gaining all his stamina only to be on the mat after the match for a while after the final count recovering.

During a six man tag (Daniel Bryan, Ezekiel Jackson and Sin Cara vs Cody Rhodes, Wade Barrett and Ted DiBiase) on a Smackdown before Capitol Punishment, Bryan pinned DiBiase after a running Dropkick in the corner despite Ted clearly kicking out before the three count. Also, there was a weird pause between the two and three counts.

The Matt Hardy/Mark Henry vs Miz/Morrison match on ECW. Matt actually pinned someone after hitting the Side Effect and the ref involved was fired a few days later.

The Hardcore Batttle Royal at Wrestlemania 2000.
Hardcore Holly is pinning Tazz for the supposed finish. The ref is counting, but suddenly stops before counting the 3 for what seems to be no real reason, with about a second or two remaining on the clock, which inexplicably results in Hardcore winning the title.
I'm pretty sure what was supposed to happen was time running out before the 3 count could be made.

Sting/Hogan Starrcade 1997 /Thread This is what I was going to say. Definitely the biggest ref botch in wrestling history - and totally derailed some of the momentum both Sting and WCW had.

Not a huge one but what that annoyed me because it ruined the flow of the match...
Angle vs Rock, No Way Out 2001.
Rock hits his finish and Hebnar thinks than Angle is supposed to kick out. But obviously Angle doesn't and Hebnar just pretends he got a shoulder up.
So they literally just pick Angle up and Rock Bottom him again, Rock shouts at Hebnar and 1-2-3.

He just kinda said "Well..." and went silent lol.
