Is it just me ( : or has Living Colour's "Cult of Personality" had a lot more radio play since CM Punk's "Pipebomb"? Don't get me wrong, I am very realistic about WWE's actual influence on popular culture (especially in recent years) and am in no way implying that there's any correlation. Maybe it's just that I'm noticing it more? It's not like I listen to any more rock radio than I did in years prior, and I certainly remember it from my childhood getting a fair amount of play, but damn it seems like I've been hearing it 2-3 times a week, which is completely ridiculous unless you frequently listen to the type of rock that Living Colour fits in with, which while not totally far from my tastes has never really been "my thing." It's not like that style or the band Living Colour themselves has really seen any kind of unrelated uptick in popularity in the last year or so, is there? I watch Raw (featuring CM Punk) semi-regularly (I go in spurts, on a few weeks in a row, off a few), so it's not like I'm sitting here watching CM Punk over and over and then saying "why's that damn song stuck in my head?!" What gives?

It's not exactly far fetched to assume that a song being featured on a weekly television show screened to millions is going to get more airplay.

Maybe I'm hallucinating, but didn't Vernon Reid say in an interview that they got a spike in iTunes sales since Punk started using it again?

Maybe I'm hallucinating, but didn't Vernon Reid say in an interview that they got a spike in iTunes sales since Punk started using it again? Thanks to Punk, it did re-enter the Top 100 songs at iTunes that first night. I know someone at Sony Music (which owns the song's publishing), and during a year-end revenue meeting in 2011, someone asked "does anybody know why we have the sudden interest in 'Cult of Personality' again?" After a moment of silence, this person (who is not a wrestling fan but attended a Summerslam party with me that year) chimed in "It's because this WWE wrestler CM Punk began using it as his entrance theme." Everyone made an "Ohhh?" face and then the meeting continued.

Yeah, I started hearing it on my radio station's 90 block more frequently after that. It was kinda cool.

Maybe Vince will debut a team called The Children of Concrete and Steel just so they can use "Type" and give that song a push.

The classic rock and 90s rock stations around where I live play it all the time. Even before the summer of Punk part 2 they played that song every 2 or 3 hours on each station.

As far as most stations go I've heard it about the same, but wrestling fans are a very dedicated fanbase (financially speaking) so them helping to push sales on itunes & demand for it at clubs (given the average age of wrestling fans) and such mean it may have more prominence now on radio geared towards a 20s male audience.
Not to say COP was unknown before Punk used it as a theme given it's one of the most recognisable guitar anthems in the World (I'm pretty sure one of the earlier Guitar Heros had it in, back when songs had to be famous enough to be specifically selected due to their being no options for downloading), it just has an extra few thousand fans now which is all good.

Yea, it's played way more now. The song jumped to #1 on iTunes when Punk started using it.
Edit: not #1 but top 100. Still...

It was in Guitar Hero 3. Got remade in fact. Newer one sounds better IMO, guitars seem....thicker, if ya get what I mean. I've always loved the song, since GTA San Andreas (I think?), the guitars are just awesome. I do remember someone tweeting Vernon Reid the week Punk started using it saying "Congratulations on the success your new song Cult of Personality" and him being like "Uh, thanks. It's been out for 10 years though."
