The whole "last match on the card" routine is antiquated as f***, in my opinion. And those that harp on it are hanging onto a philosophy that went out when there were two World Tiles. The match that receives the most hype, video packages, and TV time is the match that is marketed the most, which is the main event. So back in 2004, the whole angle with Undertaker, Paul Bearer, Paul Heyman and the Dudleys had more TV time and importance compared to the Eddie/JBL storyline?

Why not? Why should someone bother staying after the main event? The main event is the main event. Do other events have their best act in the middle of the show and then give you more stuff that you care about less? I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm genuinely asking. I don't see why anything less than your biggest and best should go on last.

The last match is THE main event. There can be other important matches on the card that can be main events, but there can be only one main event. If that makes sense. So when the last match on RAW is a 2 minute Eve v. Alicia Fox match, that is the main event? Is that a hypothetical question, or did this actually happen?

Is that a hypothetical question, or did this actually happen? It might have, actually. Last match, but not the last segment. Raw 1/30/12, the last match was Eve vs Beth Phoenix for the Divas title, but the last segment was Triple H evaluating John Laurinaitis' job and The Undertaker's return. The match lasted 30 seconds.

The final match on the card.
The match everyone has been waiting to see.
The highlight of the card.
The "main event" shouldn't be the curtain jerker nor be in the middle of a card (aka WWE/WHC matches the past 4-5 years).

Didn't Lita and Trish close out Raw a long time ago?
Also, when you think about it, a lot of the times on Raw, the main event is actually a promo/segment.

WWE Title Match, no exceptions.
I don't care if "Cena gets more time even when he's not the champion".
Wrestlemania's entire concept has pretty much destroyed the concept of a "traditional" main event, as well, due to referring to both title matches, Taker's match, and whatever special showcase matches they book with a part-timer all as "Main Events".
If you're only considering the person they fade out on with the WWE logo at the end of the show to be the "Main Event", well, I don't know what to tell you, because that's exactly the mentality that WWE (and really all wrestling) needs to slide away from.

A combination of caliber talent with positioning on the card.

It's the last match, although the final match SHOULD be the most important.
I also agree with Cena/Johnny main eventing using my reasoning.

It's the most hyped match of the card. For example, Rock/Hogan was the Main Event of Mania 18, and I will not be told otherwise.

Other: John Cena And not as a joke answer. In the modern era, almost any given Cena match is the main event.

It's funny, I always remember that as the last match of that 'Mania, and when I realize that it wasn't, I couldn't even begin to guess at what the match actually was. EDIT: I see it was HHH and Jericho. How run of the mill.

The last match which should be the most hyped match. Rock and Hogan ideally would have headlined WM18, especially since HHH beat Jericho anyway.
Kinda on topic but I love "Ladies and Gentleman...this is your MAAAAAAAIN EVENT OF THE EVENING!!!"
*Crowd goes crazy*

The main event is the most promoted match.
