The last match on the card OR Rock vs Hogan.

The main event is the most hyped, and most important match, and often the match that your entire show revolves around, and the one that WWE relies on to bring in most of the show's business/viewership. This,

Orton, Punk, Cena. That's the only true main event guys in WWE not counting the seasonal help: Rock, Brock, HHH, Taker. Main event isn't about placement on the card. You just know main event when you see it.

There certainly is a correlation between the most hyped matches and the final match on the show. I would say the only final match of a PPV that was not the main event in 2012 was Elimination Chamber, and maybe TLC. All of the other final matches were the most heavily promoted matches of the show.
Yes, Big Johnny vs. John Cena was the main event over Punk vs. Bryan. Sadly.

There's a reason the last match on the card actually goes on last. The promoter knows that the crowd is anticipating that match over every other, thus keeps the crowd hanging until the end of the show. Calling any match other than the last one THE 'main event' is nothing but a fallacy.

I agree that 98% of the time, the last match is the main event. It's just not an absolute, no exceptions thing. WM XI and WM X8 , for example.

Okay, my comment about Undertaker vs. The Dudley Boyz was no-sold. Explain to me this: Did you think that match deserved to go on last? I would have JBL vs. Eddie Guerrero from that same event go on last because that angle was a hot one for Smackdown at the time. It started after Wrestlemania for crying out loud and went through the months of April and May before their match at Judgment Day. Then came the rematch a month later.
I really don't think Undertaker/Dudleys had any right to go on last at all. I think it went last because of the ending with the concrete crypt.
I would like to think that Austin vs. Triple H at Survivor Series 2000 went on last for two reasons: 1. The Hollywood-esque ending. 2. The angle probably had more fire in it than Undertaker vs. Kurt Angle did. Sure, Angle may have had a good first reign as champion at the time, but Austin/HHH was red hot.
The same could be said for Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart at IYH Revenge of the Taker. Did people really pay to see Undertaker retain against Mankind? The Austin/Hart angle was on fire at the time.

Remember when Angle vs Henry went on last during the rumble because they needed to have the Undertaker return and destroy the ring?

The main event is the match that you can turn off the tv satisfied after watching, no matter the place in the card. If a match goes on 5th and it is the best match you have ever seen(ala Angle vs Shawn WM 21), it is the main event and you really don't have to watch the rest of the show to be satisfied.
