So, you've probably seen that "SANDY HOOK EXPOSED!" conspiracy video on your timeline over the past few days. It's a conspiracy video that's gotten something along the lines of ten million views that claims the Sandy Hook Shooting was set up by the government. It's a pretty absurd claim, and Snopes just debunked the entire video. I think it's one of the best jobs Snopes has done - www.snopes.com/politics/guns/newtown.asp#hoax

I watched it and refrained from commenting on it a number of days ago... people were really, really wanting to believe this.

Why would anyone ever give such a claim the time of day? The internet is ripe with people who are bored with their lives to the tenth degree, so they lap up all this drama and conspiracy stuff to make it more interesting. Bonus points if they have a chip on their shoulder towards authority for something completely unrelated that happened when they were younger.

The fact that some people (whether legit or not) think that our government would do something like that deeply worries me.

The sad thing is, this stuff is like peeing in a pool. It's going to be floating out there forever and ever. No matter how much you debunk this, people will want to believe this.

Honestly, this whole thing is so horrifying, I don't blame people for wanting to believe the whole thing was faked or whatever. Heck, I wish it was faked. What this is essentially, is people don't want to believe this really happened because then it could just as easily happen to their kids. It scares people.

THANK GAWD! I have been adamantly engaging people posting this crap on Facebook and saying things like "But... what if it's true... makes you think!"

I really think we're on the losing end of this if that whole deal even required debunking.

I really think we're on the losing end of this if that whole deal even required debunking. Some people STILL believe 9/11 was an inside job. There will always be stupid people, or people who want to believe the government is super corrupt and not just criminally stupid...

There are people who still believe the moon landing was a hoax.
People believe a lot of stupid things that aren't true.

In a nutshell, these people don't want to believe that world is a chaotic, unpredictable and dangerous place. They take comfort in the fact that a big bad boogeyman is behind everything. I consider it a form of denial and cowardice.
What really pisses me off is that Gene Rosen(a man who took in the bus driver and a group of children into his home during the shooting) had his address and phone number made public by a bunch of these jack asses. And of course he got non stop harassing phone calls calling him a fraud and pedophile.
I know we can't make threats to people, so I'll just say there are certain things I want to do with lead pipe.

In Stephen King's last novel, 11/22/63, he referenced someone (can't remember who) who basically explained that the JFK conspiracy theories took off because people HAVE to make sense of a seemingly random event that otherwise doesn't make sense. It's a coping mechanism. The murder of 20 innocent children is a chaotic, terrible, random event that doesn't make sense. How could someone do this? Why did this happen? People need something to believe in when often, the simplest answer, that it was lone insane person, is the right answer.

How do we know that the government doesn't create all these conspiracy theories. To distract everyone from the furthering of their reptilian agenda.

But the difference is, before, people weren't really directly affected by the conspiracy kooks. Today, people are actively finding the Newtown victims who they claim are actors and are harassing them in their insane attempt to be "right". It is not going to end well, I assure you.

I agree with you, and my earlier post isn't meant to excuse these people. At some point you need to deal with reality. Also, I think there is a difference between the people pushing these theories and the ones looking into them curiously and kind of buying it. The people who are watching that video and talking about it, for the most part, I'm sure fall into the category I was talking about earlier. But the ones making these videos and starting these websites are nuts.

Yeah, wholeheartedly agree with the rationale for why things like this and the 9/11 conspiracy stuff is so appealing. We'd love to believe there are no wicked people, just wicked faceless monoliths like the government and corporations and such. Blaming a body of people takes away the complications... they're callous just because. They're power-hungry, greedy, whatever. It's simple, and simplistic. Individuals are much more complicated and unsettling, because we don't know what sets them off, we can't point to certain characteristics and say that's definitively it, and we don't know who's going to snap next. It makes for a much less controlled world. At least with the idea of the government perpetrating these things, there's a controlled hopelessness... we'll protest, we'll "fight the power", and then we'll go home in the comfort of knowing there was nothing we could really do anyway, it just is the way it is.
