Even if we ignored the bad script and poor direction for the actors, the biggest problem this flick faced was that it tried to cram as much of Book One into a 90 minute movie as humanly possible...which is just ridiculously dumb to do.
You're adapting a 20 episode season of a TV series, meaning you have over 9 hours of material you're basing this off of, and you're going to try and work in moments from or references to THAT many episodes...and yet you keep out some of the most important elements?
I think in an ideal world, a better script would've involved making some bold choices that differed from the TV series. Not in characterizations or in overall plot, mind you...the core of the series is Aang's journey and his growth into the Avatar, mirrored by Zuko's growth into the true Fire Lord, and any adaptation needs to retain that...but maybe in using certain characters in different places, shifting around events from the story, not being afraid to say "I can't condense 9+ hours of material into 90 minutes, I have to be more creative with this rich source material).

I remember one idea I heard was that Yue should have joined the Gaang much earlier into the movie, while out on some sort of ambassador mission or something. Had a fair bit of time to get to know her in the show, but in the movie... Yeah, that would have probably helped it a lot. Also kind of floored at combining then cutting the Kyoshi warriors and Jet's crew - both important enough later I really don't know how the sequels would work without them. Though then again, I think it's a safe bet a sequel will never be made at this point.

Well I know one episode they could cut and they would lose nothing "The Great Divide".
They took out a lot of the charm of the characters, only Iroh is closest to resemble his animated counter part. Aang and Sokka two funny characters are so gloomy and serious.
If they made the sequel, Toph would probably be a depressed blind person, and Ty Lee would be just as gloomy as Mai.
