Usually I stick with the earlier Ren and Stimpy episodes, but I just watched this one for the first time in goodness knows how long today. Notice anything odd about Evil Ren's symbol here? Yes, it is designed to look A LOT like a Nazi Swastika. Aside from that they even have imagery of Ren leading an army and taking over the world as an octopus. I remember an octopus was also used to show Nazi expansion in old Ally propaganda films.
I just don't see that being allowed on children's TV today.

While I am sure it could get on the air, it would be neuttered like hell, and that is Animaniacs. Today's world is way too PC, example Derpy. Stupid PC got rid of Derpy.

While I am sure it could get on the air, it would be neuttered like hell, and that is Animaniacs. Today's world is way too PC, example Derpy. Stupid PC got rid of Derpy. Well, that only took one post. I don't think there's too much they couldn't get away with today. Adventure Time and Regular Show, two of the biggest cartoons on today, are by no means TV-G shows. They've got their own innuendo and gross out humor, I think most shows form yesteryear would be fine. |

When I think of cartoons that couldn't get away with, I immediately think of Ren & Stimpy. There's a reason it moved to prime time.  Also, I think of the name of the psychiatrist from Rugrats. |

If Animaniacs was in production today, they'd probably be able to get away with a little more than they did in the past. We're currently in an era of children's animation that allows for a lot more wiggle room content wise. Comedy shows like MAD, Adventure Time and Regular Show, while they are aired in prime time, are still basically aimed at general audiences- including kids. All three of those shows feature a lot more upfront fantasy violence and more adult-tinged dialogue than most 90's toons did. Heck, AT alone has a lot of faux-swearing that still makes it extremely obvious what the characters are really saying, and enough below-the-radar sexual references to make Prince raise an eyebrow (the episode with the giant snail looking for a mate being pretty blatant). And that's not even mentioning Legend of Korra, and what Nick allowed to eventually happen to Amon {Spoiler}and his brother - in full view. |

Derpy isn't truly gone though. Hasbro likes her, she's in the comics, featured in multiple variant covers, has tons of merchandise, and is still one of the most popular characters. According to them, they are just laying back for a while until they know what to do correctly with her. |

The only cartoons that I don't think they could get away with today are things like the original Speedy Gonzales, although the fact that he's prominent on the Looney Tunes cartoon does make me challenge that.
But as far as grossout stuff, they could and do plenty of that today.

EDIT: Also, now that I think about, no way can you get away with pointing a gun at your or someone else's head. Several of the old school looney tunes are edited today to remove that. |

Regarding the Looney Tunes and Popeye shorts, I've always heard a lot of people saying "you could never get away with that in a kids' cartoon today," but it needs to be taken into consideration that these shorts came from an era where they were produced for a general movie-going audience. Not that they weren't for kids, but they weren't just for kids. There's not really a good modern analogy to use, except for something like the Muppets.
It was in the 1950s when the cartoons were sold as packages for television that they were presented as being entertainment squarely aimed at children. Since then, we've been holding the cartoons before that time (and unfortunately, most anything animated) as something "for kids."
It's beside the point in this thread, but I do wish something Brad Bird once said would become common knowledge throughout the public: animation isn't a genre, it's a medium. Funny story: I saw Team America: World Police in a theater and there was a parent that stormed off with a couple of kids in tow. I guess they thought that since there were puppets, it was automatically for kids.

I think a lot of the shows I used to watch from the 1980s and early 1990s would not make syndicated or network TV not necessarily for content, but mainly for the fact that they aren't educational. I could be wrong, but I believe they required this of cartoons on network TV later in the 1990s. Animaniacs was mentioned earlier, and I remember them having to include some educational stuff later on in the show's run.
