Throwing in a wild card here, just because of how well the lyrics shadow my own life :
Keane - "Is It Any Wonder?"

A Beautiful love song but just painfully sad:
And an absolutely pathetic break up song. Sums up the feeling of helplessness after a breakup perfectly:
And another heart breaker:

While it's not as sad as Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" or "Tears In Heaven" it's probably one o the saddest love songs in "The Kids Are Alright" by The Who, the lyrics talking about a guy leaving his girlfriend because he thinks things will be better for her already make it sad but the fact that it sounds upbeat makes it even sadder.

Buncha pansies.
Okay okay, for some reason, a few songs by Comes With The Fall make me completely sad. They have these love songs I can apply to my life really strongly, in and out of the "love" context, and it's like pain in my heart when I hear them. Since I Laid Eyes On You, Strung Out On A Dream, and So Cruel...man I'm getting all tightened up just typing the titles. They're such good songs though!
A few songs from Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" record as well. Freddie's Dead, Little Child Runnin Wild, and Eddie You Should Know Better.

Sadder yet, this isn't me joking. I'm totally serious.

Cat's in the Cradle, shows how something being catchy lets you get away with a lot in terms of subject matter. Your dad sucked, you sucked as a dad too, now your kid will follow the depressing family trend.

How about "Dawn (Go Away)" by the Four Seasons? Frankie Valli is telling his girl to leave him because he won't give her the future she deserves (despite the fact that he still loves her).
