One thing that has been bothering me lately is that somehow it's become vogue to bash groups people because of who they are fans of. It came to a head in the days leading up to the Rumble. I saw plenty of people actively rooting against CM Punk because they couldn't wait to see the "smark tears" after he lost. That seems really strange to me. There's plenty of wrestlers I don't like, but I've never once hoped someone would lose, just so I could kick dirt on their fans. There's nothing wrong with rooting against someone because you don't like them, but I just don't get the point of rooting against someone because you want to laugh at fans. I don't get it. I really don't. My Punk fandom has nothing to do with being a "smark", or part of the mythical hivemind called the "IWC". I got news for you, we're ALL part of the "IWC", and we're all "smarks". If you own a computer, and visit any wrestling website, you're part of the Internet Wrestling Community. If you know that everything you see is predetermined, you are a smart wrestling fan. I've been holding off on posting this for a few days, because I was admittedly thrown off by many of the reactions. I guess I shouldn't have expected anything else to be honest. In the Rumble thread, I posted this: Punk's probably getting stripped of the title which is bulls***, but CM MOTHERf***ING PUNK WON MOTHERf***ERS No matter how you look at it, CM Punk pinned The Rock, and for a brief second, I was happy as hell. Sure it didn't hold up, but still... As far a calling people MOTHERf***ERS, I was basically venting at the people I mentioned in my opening paragraph. I hope people didn't take it personally, but if you did, then you're probably one of the people waiting to laugh in the faces of the losing side. If you are one of those people, why? Anyway, the reason I am a fan of CM Punk is the same reason I'm a CHICAGO Bears fan, a CHICAGO Cubs fan, and a CHICAGO Bulls fan. So, with all that being said, who are you a fan of that isn't necessarily because of wrestling reasons? Is there someone you like because of outside endeavours, hometown, etc? Who? Why?

I'm not a fan of his in-ring talents but I do respect the fact that The Miz went from reality TV star to WM headliner when almost EVERYONE doubted him at first.
As far as the people that want something solely because it will piss someone else off, I'm not too big on it either. Any time I've actively rooted for something stupid or something that goes against popular opinion, it's been for my own sick pleasure. For some people, that "I hope Wrestler X loses because it will piss people off!" attitude is backlash towards someone they don't like being hyped up as a big deal. Honestly, and I mean this in the best way possible, I really don't care who people root for.

I agree on finding the concept of wanting someone to lose so you can laugh at all their fans being angry to be strange. But....did you SEE this video?
This is why it happens. I love CM Punk, he's my favorite wrestler the way Austin and Bret Hart were my favorites when I was young. But irrational, childish anger over something so insignificant in the grand scheme is quite funny. It's still a mean spirited way to think, but I get it.

Wade Barrett went to Liverpool John Moores University (not Liverpool University as has been said by a few commentators, there's more than one in the city) and I like him more due to seeing the main LJMU building most days.

I'll agree 100%, I hate the "I'm rooting against CM Punk because his fans like him too much/think they're better than everyone" attitude, it's really not liking someone for trivial reasons(though I think liking someone because he's from Chicago is trivial too, but at least it's not bothering anyone), and kinda childish, it's not because one or two CM Punk fans are disrespectfull to you/just bothering you without really doing anything against you that you should be an ass to all of his fans. Though, the dude getting angry at CM Punk losing was very very funny, and I'm not laughing at a CM Punk fan, I'm laughing at someone with some serious anger issues.

I am a fan of CM Punk because I can identify with his lifestyle and I am a fan of John Cena because of his huge amount of charity work I respect that greatly

It was funny because that's not a reaction a grown man should have. I can honestly say that nothing in wrestling has ever made me react that way.

It works both ways though. There are some people who want to be able to laugh at the misfortune of wrestlers they don't like but when someone does it to their favorites all of a sudden they don't like it.
How many anti-HHH fans thought it was hilarious when he tapped out to Brock Lesnar and seemed to take great pleasure in him losing more than they did Brock winning? Or on the occasions when Cena loses and you get those videos with kids crying and people are laughing at them. That's no different than anti-Punk fans gloating over him finally losing the title.
Personally, as long as you don't take it too far I don't think there's anything wrong with taking pleasure in someone you dislike losing. That's part of wrestling. It's only those people who are obsessive about it that really bother me.

I am a fan of Sheamus because I feel that he's going to be something very, very good for the industry. Just the way he carries himself in the ring and how he can seem to have a good match with ANYONE makes me a fan.

You're last sentence is basically my feeling as well. As far as the Chicago part go's we disagree there. It's civic pride, just like with our teams here. Also, we tend to protect our own , maybe a little too much in some cases, but it's no different than a New Yorker being a Knicks fan IMO.

I openly cheer for the Packers to lose every game because I hate them. I don't root for them to lose just so I can laugh at there fans though. Hell, as a Cubs fans I get shit on enough by their losing ways.

I was a Steiner Brothers fan because they went to the University of Michigan. At the time I was a Jeff Jarrett fan because he called people slapnuts, and I thought that was one of the funniest things you can call someone.

I may not be the biggest fan of Sheamus's promos but I LOVE his matches. Like, he can get my attention in the ring. Also, that video is just .

I'm a fan of Kane because of all the ridiculous things he's agreed to do over the years and tried his best to make work.
I'm a fan of Cena because of the little things he does during his entrance. The talking into the camera. The pointing at any pro-Cena signs in the crowd and giving the person holding it a thumbs up. Giving his shirt/wristbands/dog tags to kids at ringside. It's an old babyface trick but I've always loved it. Rey also does it with his mask and Alberto since he turned face has started doing it with his scarf. On TV it's only a two second thing but every time they do that they're basically giving a kid a memory they'll never forget which at the end of the day is what wrestling is all about.

I'm a fan of Jeff Jarrett because, in retrospect, the dude was incredibly good at his job and had the funniest attire of all time. I'm from the south, and as a kid I felt that Jarrett was giving all southerners a bad name. I hated his accent, and his clothes, and his stupid coutnry music, his god damned strut, all of it. Now I look back and see that he was a master heel. You know how a lot of us gush all over Heath Slater for being so remarkably punchable? Jarrett was Slater x 10.

First off, loving this thread so far! I like guys like Trent Barretta, Derrick Bateman, Johnny Curtis and Curt Hawkins because they are trying their best with what little time they are given and I can relate to that.
