Let's name some games that had the potential to be great franchises, but either fizzled out or had lack luster sequels. Two worlds is at the top of my list. It was lauded as a co-op Oblivion, it was co-op s***, special mentions to Kingdoms of Amalur.

I liked Kingdom of Amalur. I don't know if one game is enough to constitute a franchise, but I've got to go with The Bouncer. It looked very fun and something very different for Squaresoft to do (at least I think it was still Squaresoft back then), but the inexplicable decision to make it so streamlined and just go from one screen to the next with a small cutscene in between, without giving the player a chance to really move around by themselves made it go from "potentially great" to "heh, this is alright, I guess". I also really liked the character design.

Dragon Age Origins. DA2 was just a half-assed phone in job. Shame what happened to the RA/C&C series as well.

^The Bouncer is an excellent example. I'm surprised people even remember that game. It was hyped by the unofficial PSM quite a bit, and we were told there would be interactive environments (back when that was still a 'feature')...but that failed to come to fruition. Instead, it was just this sorta-fun beat 'em up kind of game with some impressive CGI cutscenes used excessively. I, too, quite liked the character designs. Not a terrible game, but definitely one of those disappointments.
Silent Hill is my pick. The first three are great, Room was okay, but then they gave it to western developers who have since completely tarnished it, with varying degrees of mediocrity. Then they did those HD remasters and f***ed with the original voices, removed environmental effects and filters that created mood, launched it with all kinds of glitches, etc. That latest movie, while I haven't seen it, got horrendous reviews and is being completely torn to shreds by fans whenever their official FB makes a post about it. Everything about the franchise has gone down the shitter. It needs a reboot made by people who understand that less is more with psychological horror.

Scribblenaughts still has a chance of making it but at the moment the series is mostly wasted potential, writing about what you did in the game is more fun than actually playing it.

The Bouncer was awesome! It was my designated "Party Game" for quite some time, as you could do little four players battles. I remember my favourite character was the final boss with his arms unchained, I think the one you had to face in the True Ending, dude was SO overpowered!
Damn, I need to try and buy that game again!
Also, I was scared of the weird S&M ninja as a kid!

Suikoden. Such a shame what happened with the series. Agreed. That series, at one point, looked to be on the cusp of becoming a legacy RPG series on par with FF or DQ. Despite having fifty million freakin' side games... Kingdom Hearts. I mean, at it's premise, I should love this game. Disney characters, Final Fantasy characters, boom, weird cross-over. But even the main games left alot to be desired and they didn't go about it the way I'd have liked. Number one, I wish it was all SquareSoft/Enix characters in on it, reviving in a way some old, forgotten stars of SquareSoft titles. And, I'll second Silent Hill too. Holy heck, what happened there? I remember loving, and being terrified of, the first two or three games. After that, it slowly lost my interest. Banjo & Kazooie. All day, everyday. After getting jerked around for years, Nuts & Bolts pretty much was the headshot that killed the franchise dead. Which is depressing, as those were some of the best games released for the N64 ever.

I don't know about the Silent Hill games. They're not nearly as good, let alone creepy as they used to be (good job on outsourcing one of your flagship franchises to a company that does not in any way understand what makes it work, Konami, by the way), but they're still decent or even dare I say good games on their own.
And if you liked Silent Hill 1 & 2, I definitely recommend Silent Hill: Origins. It feels a lot like these two and was a very good surprise to me. The only downside to me is that they kept the QTEs and breakable inventory system that everyone hates yet they keep putting in every game in this franchise since Homecoming (or even The Room for the breakable items). I can't believe they didn't follow in that game's footsteps.

Oddworld was such wasted potential. The games had intriguing characters, great stories, and underline important messages that mirror our lives. I hope another studio decides to pick this franchise up and expand the Oddworld universe.

Suikoden. Such a shame what happened with the series. I still don't know why they didn't go the DLC way with that. I mean, you could make a great Suikoden 6 if you used the engine from 2 and wrote a new story to go with it. one of the best realized fantasy 'verses I've ever played in, even when the game itself wasn't the greatest (would you believe 4 was the one that got me into the series?)

"Kya: Dark Lineage"
That is, without a doubt, one of the most overlooked games that I have ever played. I know people have said that "Beyond Good & Evil" was underrated (It is, and it's a very good game, too) but "Kya: Dark Lineage" was a game that had the potential to have a franchise. I have even read that there was supposed to be a sequel but the game did not do well sales-wise. It had some cool features like getting these rings to put on the girl's arm and learn some new fighting moves. I have this game somewhere. I should look for it. I never beat the game, but I should change that.
Also, for years now, I've been reading rumors of a sequel to "Beyond Good & Evil." I don't even know what the deal is anymore. The first game was another underrated game. It has a good enough following enough that it became a PS2 Greatest Hit after a while and it warranted an HD version. I remember watching a teaser trailer for it back in 2008 but very little has been said about it.

I think the main mistake they made with Kingdom hearts wasn't so much in the characters they used as much as the game's story became a confusing, pretentious mess that you need several flowcharts to understand. and it's a DISNEY game. I bet if they had guys from Pixar write the story and just handed off the actual game development to Squenix we'd have a much more compelling, easy-to-follow game. an RPG based around Disney characters shouldn't be so convoluted or difficult toi understand.

They were supposed to be re-releasing Munch's Odyssey in HD on PS3, but it was a while back, so it may the project may have died. Shame, as the actual disk version doesn't work properly on 360!

Crash Bandicoot, imo. You had 3 solid platformers on the PSX and 1 decent platformer for the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube and still screw it up with Twinsanity and everything afterwards (aside from Tag-Team Racing, I suppose). It's really a shame that Naughty Dog gave up on it because the first three games were a LOT of fun, even though I never liked "one-hit deaths".

I don't know if Kingdoms of Amalur would count because it didn't really "fizzle out". 38 Studios closed way too quickly for anything to be done with it. I hope someone picks up the license for the sake of making a sequel though.
