MMA is still a different sport The military option is open to most anyone, and being an elite wrestler doesn't really help you succeed it in more than anyone else Professional Wrestling isn't a sport
I mean, yeah, they have job prospects, everyone does. But this basically eliminates the highest achievement wrestlers had to this point. That was a major draw for the Olympics, for a lot of sports, there was no higher level of achievement. You can't really say that about some of the other sports in it.

WTF. Isn't wrestling supposed to be one of the cornerstones of the olympics? One of its most important and iconic events?

Apparently, the six other sports vying for a spot in addition to wrestling now are baseball/softball, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, karate, and wushu. I'm actually surprised Karate isn't already an olympic sport, since other martial arts are. Out of that list the only true option to replace Wrestling is Karate or Wushu. Softball/Baseball is too Americana, Roller Sports is a ridiculous idea as is Climbing. I'm on the fence about Squash...if I could switch it with Dressage though, I would. I do not get the argument that they are too American. Other places do play them. The ISF and IBAF both have over 100+ counties in them. Its not gridiorn where only a small smattering outside the US plays them. There are alot of countries in softball and baseball that are on par if not better currently than the US. Baseball more than softball on that accord.

Of course Dressage will never be cut. There's giant piles of money involved with the sport because it's an insanely useful tax shelter. Exactly the money behind that will make that impossible to get rid of.

Ridiculous. I thought wrestling was one of the cornerstones of the Olympics going back to the days oh the original Olympic games in Greece. The term 'Greco-Roman' itself speaks to its long tradtion with the Greek culture and tradition. I hate to see an actual sport competition removed instead of less athletic-based sports based on judging maintained at the Olympics.

This is incredibly stupid. Just... Wow. The Olympics loses what little credibility it had left.

I kinda like it since Wrestling isn't that popular of a viewing sport anyway.
If its replaced by something that doesnt include weight classes, hopefully the left over medals can go into Boxing so we can have more classes for both genders.

Every seems mad for something that is getting cut due to low ratings and low ticket rates.

I'm on the fence about Squash...if I could switch it with Dressage though, I would. It makes me feel bad for all the high school and college wrestlers now. It's really too late for the 2016 teams, and there's really nothing else they can strive for other than the Olympics. One of our colleges here has a great wrestling tradition, I have to wonder if the program will be cut if there's nothing beyond college to compete or. It makes adding golf more insane to me. Make that two of our colleges. Both OU and OK State are wrestling powerhouses. The two schools have a combined 41 wrestling national championships(34 for OK State, 7 for OU). Hell it was the sport that freaking started the in-state rivalry between the two schools and where the rivalry earned its name of Bedlam.

Anyone else besides me seeing politics in this decision? Wrestling is fairly popular and should be readmitted without much of a problem. So did the IOC intentionally choose to drop a popular sport they knew might be brought back to block a new sport from coming in? Food for thought.

But on the other hand they did not HAVE to even drop a sport to begin with.

As much as I love wake boarding, I think it's far from an Olympic Sport.

It will be brought back after enough people complain. Just saw on the PWI App that Kurt Angle & TNA are throwing their support behind #SaveOlympicWrestling.
As a former high school wrestler, if it really is gone for good, I'll be pissed. For about ten minutes till I remember everything else I'm pissed off at...

There's been Women's wrestling in the Olympic Games since 2004, so it's probably more that the stuffed shirts in the IOC just find wrestling, period, to not be 'cultured' enough for their tastes.

The IOC didn't cut it from the games, Kurt Angle announced he was in training for 2020 and all the other nations pulled out. They had no choice, he'd be more machine than man by then.
