What's funny was back in the late 90s people complained about the Rock and Austin like they do/did for HHH more recently. Hogging the spotlight, repetitive boring promos, holding people back, same main event matches, glass ceiling etc.

No era was without flaws and critics to tear it down. I read a lot of message boards and wrestling sites that seem like they hated almost everything. Now people talk about that time with glowing praise. Nostalgia makes everything awesome in hindsight.

forums.thesmartmarks.com/lofiversion/index.php?t5615.html"I've seen Prototype on a wrestling special that came on a couple of years ago and he looked awesome in it. He should be able to do well once coming in."forums.thesmartmarks.com/lofiversion/index.php?t9410.html"They should have kept him as Prototype and kept Deacon Bastista as Leviathan. Those names sound much cooler and are much easier to chant during a match. WWE made a stupid mistake changing them." forums.thesmartmarks.com/lofiversion/index.php?t8824.html"With the current state of pro wrestling at one of its lowest points ever, I find myself longing for the “good old days” more than ever before. While the WWF has yet to hit rock bottom, it seems almost inevitable, with the likely departure of Steve Austin, and the return of the Clique being the main factors. In the past year, the WWF has let themselves completely fall apart, and I feel that the lack of any real competition is the reasoning behind it."

Some of these threads are really interesting to me as I started watching wwe 2002 (from the raw after mania) the other day I stopped watching wrestling for quite a few years (not by choice but by my local cable company shutting down) at the exact same point, gotta be careful to check the dates thought as some of them could contain major spoilers (yeah spoilers of things that happened 10 years ago!)
I honestly dont understand all the love Maven seemed to get, I thought people would have thought the same of him as they do Bo Dallas.
And 2002 probably had one of the strongest rosters ever, so strong that they diddn't even have room on the card for Undertaker the night after mania on Raw.

Back then Jericho was THE sacred internet darling. Him losing a big match was not a fun thing on message boards.

forums.thesmartmarks.com/lofiversion/index.php?t2240.htmlThe UPN Network is apparently interested in adding a second WWF show. UPN will apparently be looking very closely at the "WWF Divas: Sex On The Beach" special that is set to air next Wednesday. If the rating for the show is high, it could be turned into a weekly series.
Interestingly enough, the original idea for Smackdown was for it to be an all-women show centered around Sable. That idea, however, was obviously dropped in favor of the Smackdown that currently airs.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'd love to see those. Just goes to show you can't please everybody.

Somewhat related, I remember reading through a bunch of Herb Kunze posts from the late 90s a few years back, and outside of Austin matches, he hated pretty much EVERYTHING about the WWF.
Some things never change. And oddly enough, the WWF product goes through a downturn when a member of the Clique is the main attraction. Funny how that is.

Hindsight, since Conway and Cena were pretty equal in OVW. Again, it's hindsight. I remember when Maven showed up, he was getting a pretty hefty push right out the gate. I pulled for him on Tough Enough because he DID show charisma, but once I saw him without a shirt on and having matches that consisted of nothing but dropkicks, I fell out of favor. But it's not impossible to think that at the time, Vince wanted someone like Maven to get good exposure, and who better to give it to him than Booger Red? And you know what? I wouldn't have minded, it would have been an amazing Wrestlemania squash...just Maven getting his ass kicked, it would have worked. Also, the era of wrestling you grew up with or first became a fan of is the greatest and everything that comes after it sucks. Always. Well, if it sucked when I first started watching, wouldn't I not watch? I don't see how there is any invalidity to something that is of opinion to begin with.

I was actually quite active in the IWC back then (and earlier), but I can't find any of my old posts since I think all the forums I was on are long gone. The two that stick out most I posted on was the very first Wrestlecrap Forum (on Delphi Forums), which I know was killed long ago and Whacked Out Wrestling, which I can only find traces of.

Hindsight or not, still hilarious and nothing at all will convince me otherwise. Yeah, Conway didn't exactly make it when he got to WWE. If the front office had more of a hard on for him and wasn't given a shitty gimmick, he may have been the guy who they forced upon us, at all costs. Just remember, at some point a lot of people buy into what WWE sells. And if Vince was absolutely hard pressed for Conway, we may have people talking about how "kayfabe legit" he seems now. Thankfully, that's not the case. But back then, I was a believer that he could have been big and thought for sure he at least had a future in the same vein as Chris Benoit did at the time. I hardly ever said back then that people were going to be "the future", but I do remember saying that about Batista and Cena in 2003, which actually ended up happening.
