And I'm not sure if this is a joke or not, but apparently the Islanders are trying to make a deal to acquire Evgeni Malkin. The Pens to the Islanders:

Yeah it wasn't serious. Had it removed from the original post. “Evolution of a Suspension,” first in a series of Dept. of Player Safety educational videos, debuts at 1 p.m. on NHL.com And here is part 1: www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=656884

God, can we please just make the people at NBC Sports go away?
The new thing they're pushing this season is "Wednesday Night Rivalry", where they supposedly take two rivals and give them a national stage to play one another.
It paid off this week: they had Philly vs. Pitt, and it was the second highest drawing regular season game they've shown (apparently they broke the 900,000 viewer threshold here in the States).
But they began this whole schlock with Rangers vs. Bruins. For anybody who watched it, tell me I'm not the only one who recalls that they hyped it by pointing out "Hey, the Yankees and Red Sox hate each other! Um...the Pats and Jets do, too!". Rangers vs. Bruins hasn't actually been a rivalry in decades, at best.
Meanwhile, they're hitting new lows this week by giving the slot to Flyers vs. Caps.
Flyers vs. Caps?
I'm sure we'll get a 15 minute spiel from Pierre, Millbury, and Jones telling us all why only a national stage like NBC Sports could contain the blood orgy between these two time-tested, bitter rivals, who's playoff wars of recent years can only be descr-...
Oh, right. They're not rivals. At all.
Carry on, then.
In all seriousness, all this is is taking the same damn six teams NBC/Versus has been showcasing for over half a decade now, but giving the games they show them in a fancier name. That's literally all this is. Stupid.

You seem to be taking a marketing ad campaign a little bit too much to heart

I just want actual rivalries.
Philly vs. Pitt counted as one, literally NONE of the other games they've shown have.
If you're not going to give me fun rivalry matchups, then ditch the campaign and don't get my hopes up.

To be fair, when they promise a "Rivalry Night", they ought to feature actual established rivalries, or at least, burgeoning ones, not made up ones or rivalries that haven't been relevant in a long while.

At least we get LA/Detroit after the Caps/Flyers. Sure it isn't Hawks/Canucks or Pens/Flyers, but at least both teams don't really like each other too much; as far as the fans go, nobody really likes Red Wings fans.

That's literally all this is. Stupid. I can defend this. The Rangers and Bruins had some serious bad blood in the 1970s, so it's not a media thing. I've read some old articles and trust me, these teams HATED each other. You don't have to be divisional rivals to have some hatred for each other (see Chicago-Vancouver). Blues-Red Wings played the week before, and they've been division rivals for eons in the Norris/Central. Bruins/Habs the week before that- can't dispute that as a rivalry. And as for Caps/Flyers- how you young'uns forget. They were division rivals from 1980-1998, and have clashed 4 times in the playoffs, including recently in 2008.

Bad blood 40 years ago doesn't apply today; Rangers fans generally don't care about the Bruins, and visa versa, and the players don't play with any kind of chip on their shoulders against one another. Same deal with Flyers/Caps; yes, they used to share a division...about twenty years ago. Meeting in the playoffs these days really isn't a signal of a rivalry, and there's little in the way of stated animosity between the two. It simply isn't a rivalry. It's an excuse for Comcast to the give the Flyers simply yet another nationally broadcast game. EDIT: I will admit, though, I had no memory whatsoever of them showing Bruins vs. Habs; normally the US stations don't show Canadian teams because they don't profit off of any ratings from Canada. In that case, good on them for finally taking that step in the name of decent broadcasting. Now, just make up for it with the rest of the crappy lineup and actually get this thing into gear.

The only animosity between the Flyers and the Caps is the same kind of animosity the Flyers have with just about every other team in the NHL. It's really unremarkable, especially in the context of the other Atlantic Division teams and ESPECIALLY the Pens.
And yeah, most Rags fans I know, including my dad, don't really care much about the Bruins one way or another.

HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE. 14-0-3. Most games to start a season in NHL history without a loss in regulation. The 2012-13 Chicago Blackhawks, well done!
