I'm of the opinion that MST3K should have been liked Doctor Who and just had a revolving cast. The concept just seems too good to not keep going and the types of characters (a host, an evil scientist, her goons, the bots) seem flexible enough to cast a different actors into.
There would of course be downsides. For instance there are only so many and movies out there and even fewer that MST3K could show and would suit the format. However, taking into account they have the entire history of cinema to work with it would be quite a while before they ran out. Plus, time wouldn't just stand still and new bad movies would continue being made. Also, as a last resort they could always use the same movie twice. I'm sure a Manos riffing from 2013 with an all new cast would be quite different from the original.
Another downside could be that some replacements could be weak and thus entire years of the show could be lame. However, that's something every continuous series has to face.

Rifftrax is a thing, so yeah. I don't think you need the set and all that for it to work.

We have Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic. Close enough to a continuation of the show.
That said, while I could easily see what a DW-like revolving cast of characters for MST3K wouldbe like, the cast of actors, the writers, and the crew were not so revolving.

Kind of glad it ended, those later seasons with Pearl just weren't very good for the most part. I wouldn't mind seeing a show with the same people involved where they also riff movies...oh wait..I can.

There's no reason it ever should have ended, and, honestly, had it lasted a little longer, I'm sure Netflix or some other outlet would have picked them up.
I'm actually one of those weirdos who thinks the show only got more refined and sharper as the series went on, something that's been lost with Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic. Given how loyal they are to the concept, I'm pretty sure Mike, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett would still be keeping on keeping on as Mike, Servo, and Crow.
And yes, I think Bobo and Observer are f***ing brilliant.

Of course, I love Rifftrax, but hate having to buy the crappy movies.

Well as far as I know, they wanted to but Sci-Fi Channel didn't.

Last year I went to a Rifftrax Live screening where they did Manos. It was hilarious, and only Kevin Murphy carried over from the original MST episode (well, Mike was Torgo in the MST episode, but he hadn't taken Joel's position yet).

I just pretend that Rifftrax is Mike, Crow and Servo without getting to see them... Of course, I love Rifftrax, but hate having to buy the crappy movies. That's why I just buy the Shorts collections.

Yes if only to stem the tide of terrible imitators that followed.

Well as far as I know, they wanted to but Sci-Fi Channel didn't. Yeah, it's a shame. I guess they needed more time for their glorious original movies.

That wasn't the point of the show. The opening credits of the early seasons even pointed that out.

I didnt even like the skits to begin with (aside from the gamera song, and i did like the invention exchanges in the beginning). I usually skipped past them and just watched the film being riffed.

No, Rifftrax is more than a worthy continuation.

As is Cinema Titanic. I feel it doesn't get enough love. Rifftrax is great as well but I feel Joel/Frank/Trace/Mary Jo should get some of our MST3K love along with Mike/Kevin/Jim and Bill. Plus it seems like if their ever was an issue both camps are over it and have nothing but respect for the work that each other does.
