Love how both my songs got the same score. I wish Z-A & Jazzman the best of luck in the sing-off.

I'm surprised Centerfield didn't rank to high with the other judges I thought it was the best song this round which is why I gave it the highest score. Its nice to see different musical taste between the judges makes things more interesting

You folks really outdid yourselves here. I bow to each and every one of you. So fun to listen to these tracks, and I love the versatility on display. No exaggerations: I'm in awe of what happened during this round with the exception of just a couple of songs. Thanks a ton for letting me be a part of it all.
U + Me = Us- 2ge+her
The less I say about this, the better. See also comments from early early in the game about “novelty picks.” It’s always a big risk. Can have some high payoffs, but in a round where there is such a wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide open bank of song selections (one of the widest banks of song selections we’ve had in a round), I’m frankly disappointed that this is the best you could come up with. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Cruel Summer- Ace of Base
A pop band that always seemed to do pop right. A lot of imitators out there. I like the 80s pop roots mixed with shades of the early-to-mid 90s beat-shift generation of pop music. And they stayed true to that through the end of the 1990s, not shying away from what 1994 Ace of Base was. What always lacked a bit in this song was the casual-ish nature of the vocals in the verses that kinda bring the song down a bit. I can find myself singing this in the car robotically a little more than I would emphatically like some other songs of Ace of Base. And this makes the repetitious nature of a pop song like this stick out a little more, as if it drags toward the end. Still, a noble attempt and one of the songs least likely from the band, I think. Not bad at all overall. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Parlez-vous Francais?- Art vs. Science
Surprisingly catchy tune here. I have never heard it. I mean, it’s really surprising how catchy that was on a first listen. I could see it growing old after a while and not being the bright spot of a radio-listening day after the newness has worn off. That video though. That’s some captivating stuff right there. Probably the best video we’ve seen throughout this competition so far this season. This is a real bright spot in the round up to this point. Well-timed and well-played. ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down- The Band Whaaaaaaaaaat?!?! Brilliant choice. Brilliant! I’ve forgotten all about this song (and its cover), and you popped it at just the right time. Classic FAN Idol gameplay right here and it’s to be commended! This is showing off some depth, and that’s always something appreciated by this judge. Quality … plus showing off the smarts. That timbre is unmatched as a vocalist—distinct, recognizable, and the pacing is just perfectly balanced with the instrumentation. This is a band that understands balance and musicality. Just goes to show that “in your face” type stuff can be equaled by a song that understands dynamics and little idiosyncrasies that can match the perfectly with that song’s function. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eternal Flame- The Bangles
Love it! And have considered using it myself! On reality singing shows, if a contestant with a golden sweet voice would pick this song, I think it would go over mega huge with viewers. It’s a song we know, but it’s also something you don’t hear that often. That’s a good balance of exposure. Excellent use of the triangle here too. Haha. People probably overlook it because it’s so subtle. I always thought it would be a marvelous marvelous marvelous SNL skit to have cast members represent The Bangles in the studio, and one of the background musicians is way too overzealous on the triangle with inappropriate gyrations, overemphatic strikes to the instrument, and such during that beginning part, and she just gets the look from the bandmates and the producer frequently stops the recording to emphasize, “Too much triangle!!!” In my mind, it plays out as a perfect sequel to the cowbell sketch with an opposite shift on the premise. Eventually, the producer—realizing that there is nothing he can do to harness the enthusiasm of the performer—finally hands the overzealous performer a gong-sized mallet and a huge drum. So when the dramatic conclusion of the song hits, she does those big percussion smashes toward the end of the song and all is perfect once again and all of sudden The Bangles have a huge hit on their hands. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)- Don McLean
Another intelligent pick here. I appreciate that! You’ve done some thinking on this one. I would’ve never thought to pick this song, but it really really works here. “…How you tried to set them free/They would not listen, they did not know how/Perhaps they’ll listen now” is such a wow-rific lyric every time! There is something dark and ominous and unsettling in that expression accompanied by the ever so important beat/pause before entering the next line of the song, the refrain. Well-timed here, and I appreciate this choice. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Hurricane Drunk- Florence and the Machine
ANOTHER interesting choice here that cleverly fits the round. Impressed. And actually, I listened to this song last night, oddly enough. And here it is in my in-box, and it’s a welcome addition. A golden voice. I think it’s probably safe to say with one of my choices at the end of last season that I have a lot of respect for this vocalist. What a unique power she has. And the accompaniment is always seemingly dead on. I’m not sure how Florence and the Machine hasn’t dominated music the way Adele, Lady Gaga, and Ke$ha have been. Maybe there’s a depth there that isn’t in some of the others lyrics? I’m not sure the reason. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Volare- The Gipsy Kings
Another timbre-ific lead vocalist. There is a color to his voice that is unique and untouchable. The musical stylings add a lot to the song as well. A fun track that doesn’t lose much at all in translation. Those guitar strings are just such a great backup to an already standout voice. It really is a fantastic pick for the game and a good time to unleash it in this category. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Black Balloon- Goo Goo Dolls
Unreal coincidence number 2 of this round is that I j-u-s-t listened to Goo Goo Dolls before arriving today. Really dig the song. It’s a band whose catalog goes so deep that it’s not hard to find winners anywhere you look with them. Lyrically on top of things and a perfect set of dynamics in each song that really reaches the message of each track. This one is no exception and a fine, fine selection because of that fact. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Scarlet Begonias- Grateful Dead
I’m blown away by the ideas I’m seeing this round. Once the round got going, it REALLY got going. The job is insanely difficult now for me. Musically on fire right here. After hearing this track, it’s not hard for anyone to imagine the huge following this band had. A strong sense of band identity in the lyrics and layering musical effects here. It’s just the kind of track that Grateful Dead would’ve done and no one else. I love that about this pick! SUPER strong sense of identity here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Crowd Chant- Joe Satriani
Really appreciate the musicality here and the pop culture-driven nature of the pick. However, in a round where there are just so many top-heavy selections, this gets a little lost in the shuffle. If you’re asking me to judge and select songs that would mostly likely get the radio dial turned up and complete attention given, there are just some other selections that garner that kind of response from me. Nothing wrong here, and I love the thought process, but it’s just a matter of the selection being a little lightweight when stacked against some of the other well done picks. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Centerfield- John Fogerty
Neat! Another song rich in pop culture tradition. Unforgettable intro to this song. Another example of why this round is so stacked. Maybe if I hadn’t heard this song so many times in my life, I wouldn’t have such an “overplay” feel toward it. Undeniably a good song. But it’s worn itself a little thin on me over the years. It’s kind of that “Jack and Diane” effect from last round. Just have heard it so so so many times that it’s lost a bit of edge for me personally. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elvis is Dead- Living Colour
Good grief, this band is so fun! No way rankings here can justify how much I appreciate this selection. Just ignore any placement and hear these words: I really really enjoy pick as a clever, energetic, just flat out awesome connection to the round’s theme. I bow to you even though you might spit on my ranking for it. I just had to give some edge to those that carry a whole lot of weight on their own equally as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ One Night in Bangkok- Murray Head
Great 80s track that—to me—has NOT gotten overplayed. Love how a song can re-emerge from an era of overplay and still resonate. Great representation of the era, and a flat out hilarious pick (to me) in terms of making the category work here. I love the creativity! It’s a throwback that doesn’t lose flavor kinda like what I saw with Tommy Tutone in that this song doesn’t get thrown in our face in pop culture as much. I talked about identity earlier, and it’s not so much that this is a strong identity piece for this band, but for the era of music it originated from: this represents the era so well. And it’s just a perfect track for a movie. Mostly though, it’s just something that is so unique to its era and it could never be duplicated in any other time period. I love that about this unique pick! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I Can- Nas
I could almost take the Lupe Fiasco comments from the second song of that Evolution round and apply it here. I just don’t get behind the inspirational type songs that seem like a platform more than a song. And even though I’m a fan of minimalism, that stripped version of Fur Elise in the background is way too maudlin, as is the song in general. If this were a Sesame Street song, I might react differently to it, but it’s an actual track that we’re supposed to take ultra seriously. It’s just too lightweight and preachy to me, and I don’t like being educated by someone who’s trying to make a buck off cheap emotions. It doesn’t come across as genuine at all. All in all, very empty lyrically and stylistically. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)- The Offspring
One of my least favorite songs from this band. You could almost take my comments from the Evolution round I made about Green Day and apply it to this Offspring song. I love this band, but they were totally going the “hip rock” route at this stage in their careers just so Carson Daly would have to play their songs every afternoon because of fan votes. I thought it was a big time catering to an audience that were never Offspring fans to begin with. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1901- Phoenix
And the unreal coincidences continue! The trifecta of coincidences in fact! I also listened to this song last night! Except it was a cool cover that I had never heard and it just happened by chance. I love this song and the band. It seems like one of those bands that’s cool for people to hate, or hater bait as I like to put it. But I love what goes on with this song musically and the vocals suck me in EVERY time. What a flair he has in his delivery! I can’t help but sing along to this song. And structurally, I love the variations in each verse that stay on a melody, but they are slight enough to be recognizably different than the one prior. Might I add that it’s a clever pick for the category as well. Love that! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Never Gonna Stop (The Red Red Kroovy)- Rob Zombie
I’m marking out for a Rob Zombie pick! YES! You have guts! I am rewarding that! Not my favorite selection you could’ve gone with from this artist, but still, I mark for the effort nonetheless! I think this is an underrated artist who does power correctly! I also like how he doesn’t make any apologies for tying in fads or trendy stuff amid something that’s foundationally so … alternative. I LOVE that mix, in fact. To me, this particular piece is a little bit like Monster Magnet, if Monster Magnet were actually good. The guy is creative and pushes all kinds of buttons at once in his music. I like the ambitiousness of it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Living in America- The Sounds
WHAT IN THE WORLD?! I’M MARKING OUT!!! I’ve been trying to use this band since the FIRST season I ever played as a contestant! Finally, The Sounds have arrived! I can’t believe it! I simply must know who this is that chose it. Totally marking out. Great choice for the round, and I’m marking so hard that my “make analysis” button is broken right now. I just was to enjoy the heck out of this! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Honey Bee- Tom Petty
What a great album! I’m amazed by this round as a whole! LOVE the driving rhythm of that guitar! It’s dirty, seductive, grungy, and massive at the same time. Stylistically, just such a fantastic song. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Colors of the Wind- Vanessa Williams
I can appreciate the selection here, but to make it short and sweet, there are just so many powerhouses in this round that this particular piece just falls short in comparison. Gotta bring the big guns in a round of this caliber. This just gets drowned out by the stellar creativity and merit of the other picks.
1. 1901- Phoenix 2. Eternal Flame- The Bangles 3. Living in America- The Sounds 4. Hurricane Drunk- Florence and the Machine 5. Scarlet Begonias- Grateful Dead 6. Never Gonna Stop (The Red Red Kroovy)- Rob Zombie 7. Black Balloon- Goo Goo Dolls 8. Honey Bee- Tom Petty 9. Volare- The Gipsy Kings 10. One Night in Bangkok- Murray Head 11. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down- The Band 12. Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)- Don McLean
13. Parlez-vous Francais?- Art vs. Science 14. Centerfield- John Fogerty 15. Elvis is Dead- Living Colour 16. Cruel Summer- Ace of Base 17. Crowd Chant- Joe Satriani 18. Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)- The Offspring
19. Colors of the Wind- Vanessa Williams 20. I Can- Nas 21. U + Me = Us- 2ge+her

wow. if antyhting i thought that centerfield would score high, and black balloon would score lower Never know man. I'm going to work soon, but I'll drop in periodically. When I receive the Elimination Round picks, I'll send them to the judges and post in the thread. Keep sending me your picks for Round 20 when you can. So we don't have to keep going back a few pages, Round 20's theme is: Curtain Jerkin', Main event Workin' Round 20 is about time, specifically duration. Choose 2 songs, one 4 minutes or less and one over 4 from one band or artist. Can be any genre, time period, etc. but, unlike the Evolution Round, it must be from the same artist or group (so you can't pick, say, Nirvana and then Foo Fighters for Dave Grohl. Same band or artist). That was pretty crazy Knalsic. I wonder what the odds are such a tie would happen would happen? Maybe you'll win a Round Cage. If you stay in the game, you just might pull it off (well duh, what an astute comment there Host Guy ) Always enjoy reading the incredibly in-depth analysis Peg. What a fantastic judging mind you possess; I feel that the Rounds are getting tougher and tougher to judge and that the bottom 2 for each Round tend to still select great music, it's just that every Round is so hard with the talented contestants that we have. I definitely agree Strongbrad. I can never predict what the judges will choose. Marked hard for the Rob Zombie song, however. Really, lots of fantastic picks here; Parlez-vous Francais? is unbelievably catchy.

Not surprised with being in the sing off... I was not feeling this round at all which sucked, especially with the bonus song. However I am surprised Im here with Jazzman... which is kinda like Teddy Long saying i'm "going one on one with the Undertaka!" basically feeling a loss. haha, all joking aside Good luck Jazzman, if I gotta lose glad it's to a great competitor like you.

I'm really surprised at the turn out of this round. Didn't expect those two songs to do well compared to so many other great music this round had to offer. J - You do still love me! TOO SWEET - Glad to see you finally win a round. pegasuswarrior ----> Took many of the words straight from my mouth with his comments/evaluations - nearly word for word in agreement (such as the Wonderful music of The Sounds - my mark-out of the round). I'll elaborate on the rest with more comments when I'm less EXHAUSTED.

For Winning Round 19: School of Rock, the winning contestant receives this: {Spoiler} Spoiler
A scene from a most excellent school presentation, from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure!Well, that's awesome to see. Felt pretty confident I'd avoid the singoff but psyched to have finally won my first round. Now I'll be rooting for Cageking to do the same. Just for some small comments about the round: I seriously considered using 1901 for the numbers round so I'm glad to see it still was used and even happier to see it scored very well. Some real guilty pleasures in this round. Ever since the Hangover movie, I've loved One Night in Bangkok. Also thought that Parlez-vous Francais? and U+Me=Us were great. And Eternal Flame is always a great/underrated pick. As usual, Peg provides very insightful evaluations. Always great to read and I hope that some of the other judges, if they have the time, can chime in with some words of their own. Looking at the rankings for songs, there were no "bad" picks. A lot of our picks scored around the same amount and it seemed like the judges were mostly scattered, with some of the highest songs getting some very low rankings and vice versa. Pretty surprised at the singoff contestants. FW91 has been doing great this entire competition and Jazzman's pick always impress me. If the save hadn't been used last round, I'm certain it would've been used here. Good luck guys and I look forward to seeing your picks.

Quite happy with my scores. Good luck to the Bottom 2.
A question about Round 20: It doesn't matter what time frames the 2 songs come from, right? It doesn't have to be 'the early song is the short song' and 'the later song is the long song' or anything like that, correct?

I don't think the time the song was made matters I think both songs could of been made the same year as long as one is under 4 minutes and the other is above 4 minutes. Tyger can confirm if that is right or not I believe it is.

So, you can have one late, one earlier song, as well as songs from the same record. Length is the only consideration.

Waiting on an Elimination Round contestant.
We have 3 out of 9 pairs of songs in for Round 20, so keep them coming in. When I get enough pairs, I'll announce Round 21's theme. Round 20's winner will have the option of sending in an additional song for Round 21.
