Red Sox win again somehow. I really expected this to be a sub .500 team this year. I cant help but to wonder if the smoke and mirror show is going to collapse on itself eventually. The best offense in the league and a much more likable team than years prior.

Lackey has been fantastic for about the last 4-5 weeks. His record is 6-6, but he could, and probably should have 8-10 wins

I had a bad feeling Matheny having all his starters try to go the distance damn near every night might come back to bite us in the ass. There's a reason Billy Ball was so fleeting.

Twins honor Mariano Rivera with a rocking chair made of broken bats that were broken while Rivera pitched against Minnesota. They named it the chair of broken dreams. Pretty classy move by the Twins. ![](http://l2.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/hNwx2qO0cQEo5gABM6IGIw--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYzMA--/http://media.zenfs.com/en/blogs/sptusmlbexperts/marianochair070213.jpg)

I don't wanna be attacked by Yankees fans here and I honestly am a big fan of Mariano's, but am I the only person who really doesn't like when a player announces that it will be his final season prior to actually retiring?
I think there's something really disingenuous about it. I'm not singling out Mariano here because it's happened before in every sport imaginable, but I can't help but feeling like there's an element of "Here's your last chance to tell me how great I am and write columns about it" in play.
Am I off-base here?

Am I off-base here? It can also be used as a way to boost attendance if that player has some sort of history in some teams as they know they won't see him competing again.
