Empire Magazine has given it 3 out of 5. Although I don't care for the actual reviewers initial stance for this movie so I am going to ignore it.
The summary review: Edwards’ film boasts great filmmaking, noble intentions and cracking monster action. Yet it never reconciles its B-movie origins — preposterous premise, clichéd characters — with its solemn, Nolanised tone. This Godzilla stomps but very rarely romps.
*If you do go read the empire online complete review there are potential plot structure spoilers in it.

From one review
The Upside: Godzilla in action; top notch special effects; the first 10 minutes; Bryan Cranston
The Downside: Needs more Bryan Cranston; missing a good lead; a majority of the first two acts; wastes Elizabeth Olsen, Sally Hawkins, and David Stratharin on nothing roles
On The Side: There’s a cool little nod to Mothra in the film.
Most seem to say that if you just want to see kaiju battles you'll love the movie, but if you want strong acting it leaves a little to be desired.
I'm fine with that

I'm trying to think if I've ever walked into a Godzilla movie expecting anything but a baseline level of acting. I normally want to see Godzilla doing rope-a-dope or a body slam.

Just with Bryan Cranston added in.

Instead of fighting other monsters, they should've found a way to make Bryan Cranston 50 feet tall and have a fistfight with Godzilla in the end.

I was going to mention his turn as the Snizard in Power Rangers, but then I realised he was one of the few monsters that didn't get to grow to job to the Megazord.

The one good thing about the first American Godzilla. Jamiroquai's Deeper Underground, badass tune. That baseline FAN, that baseline! If only the movie was as good as this song...

It definitely scored closer to the shitty P Diddy song with the Kashmir sample on the acclaimed "Godzilla: The Album" grading scale.

Yeah, I was hoping we wouldn't see too much human drama (or humans in general) in this film. I watch Godzilla for the kaiju battles. If critics are complaining due to a lack of the actual actors and/or Oscar-worthy performances, I'm just fine with that.
The idea of a monster-heavy film with little of anything else sounds like exactly what I'm looking for.

Bitching about a lack of 'human drama' in a Godzilla film is like doing so with a porno. Let's face it, most of us aren't there for character development. We just want to see something smashed.

Only other negative I've heard is that they really tease you through 2/3 of the movie.

Just saw it... I really liked it. Not the best Godzilla movie... But it's definetly the best Godzilla movie released in the last two decades. Some complaints: the teases... When it looks like some shit was about to go down, it would cut to the next scene. And the big final battle is dark, I could barely see what was going on.. Like in the second Alien v Predator movie.. Just hope the cinema you see it at has little light leakage. I did not see it in 3D so I can't rate that aspect. My score out is 4 capsized battleships out of 5. Oh near the start there is a scene in a classroom.... Keep an out for a poster on the blackboard ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) !! And now some spoilers! {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}Godzilla fights two monsters called the MUTO. A large radiation eating insect beast. One of them can fly, and the other is about the same size as Godzilla.
Bryan Cranston is great, but he is not in the movie for long. I think he appears for just less then half of the 2 hour runtime.
Godzilla has his atomic breath and it's a great moment when he finally uses it.
And Godzilla is in hero mode for this movie, he does cause some collateral damage that probably resulted in a lot of deaths though. But at the end of the film people cheer him and a news headline says: KING OF THE MONSTERS SAVES OUR CITY. Edit: oh and Godzilla origin as explained in the movie {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}Godzilla and the Muto were from a period on earth when the atmosphere was radioactive. Hence their mutations.. And Godzilla was further mutated when attempts to exterminate him with nuclear weapons between 1954 and the time the movie is set.
The species from this age borrowed deep underground when the earths atmosphere began to clean up so they could feed on the radiation of the earth's core.
This explanation while a departure does set up sequels where Godzilla's foes and alleys could potentially appear.
