Kerry Von Erich was probably my favorite wrestler of all time, and we all know how his tragic life ended up, but what was really the deal with him? I was watching his match with Lawler from AWA superclash from the greatest wrestlers of the 80's DVD and before the match even starts you can see him messing with his arm underneath his robe, which later on during the match reveals to be a huge gash. From what i have heard from various sources, he scratched his arm from the blade poking out of his taped fist.
The question that i have though, is that were things like this a regular occurance during his matches? I remember him being my favorite wrestler as a kid (and still to this day) but as a kid, i never really paid attention to things like workrate and that sort of thing. I know he had an addiction problem due to only having one foot from his motorcycle accident, but was it just a case of him not being able to control his demons, or was he just a complete idiot? Also, was there ever any mention on WWF television (or even WCW for that matter) when he died? During '93 is when i stopped reading the dirt sheets for a while, and therefore i didnt even find out he had died until '96 or so, and i dont remember his death ever being mentioned on TV so that is why i ask

he was the stereotypical jock
cornette tells two stories about him, one time while lacing his boots, he got the cord to his head phones interlaced, someone saw this, and yelled hey Kerry, his head shot up then down. cause of the interlaced cord. another was a time when they were at a show and kerry comes running into the locker room asking if anyone had seen his dog, problem was he didn't bring the dog to the show.
they would have to give all the von erich's detailed directions to the show, cause if the show was in school gym, and they showed up to the wrong gym in the town they would just leave, and not inquire if there was another gym in the town.

According to Lawler, the arm gash was self-inflicted in the locker room because Von Erich absent-mindedly scratched his arm with the same hand that was holding the blade.
The best/worst Von Erich story I ever read was (I think) on these boards by someone who attended a special WM8 "VIP party" hosted by the WWF, and KVE was the special guest. He showed up late, tired and wasted out of his gourd while WWF staff tried to smooth over the situation.
My personal favorite example of his ineptitude in the ring was during his IC title match against Perfect where he's being slapped around in the corner after a beating, and the second Perfect turns around to gloat to Heenan, KVE stands up straight and starts walking toward him as if the previous three minutes of the match never happened. Nice selling there, Modern Day Warrior.

This guy was my hero as a kid, and it breaks my heart to hear these stories about how inept he was both in and out of the ring. but such is life i guess. I still want to know if there was ever any mention of his passing on WWF or WCW TV when he died

rumor has it that thier drunken antics killed wrestling in texas.
after their older brother was killed, a small town made a horseshoe of white roses and gave it to the remaining brothers. they being the drunken idiots they were, took it, started driving, and just at the town limits threw it in a ditch.
when Kerry died, wrestling was in the start of its recession, and that was around the time of the steriod trials, so i don't think vince was going associate himself if an alleged coke addict. who commited suicide. if memory serves me watts was in wcw at the time and i don't think he was going to acknowledge a rival promotion, no matter how dead.
unfortunately kerry would have been better off in soviet russia, where they would have told him keep throwing discus. you go to olympics and beat capitalist pigs.

Well to Watt's credit, he did acknowledge Andre's passing which was right around the same time as Von Erich's. Andre got the nod from Watts but Kerry didn't, so it couldnt have been all that bad with Bill regarding wrestlers from rival promotions.

That's because at the time, Hogan and Andre were the biggest legends in the business.

Another thing i just noticed while watching the match between Lawler and Kerry is that the announcer mentioned that Kerry had defeated Hulk Hogan at some point in his career. When did those two ever lock up? Was it in the AWA? I dont remember Von Erich ever wrestling there (with the exception fot the super clash events) The earliest Kerry matches i remember seeing were back in the early to mid 80's in World Class. If this 'supposed' Hogan vs Von Erich match actually exists, i would give anything to see it in its entirety

In its later days, the AWA announcers didn't let reality be a handicap in their announcing.

I remember hearing something about the Von Erichs killing a cat/dog in the locker room
Another funny story was in Ric Flair's book where he was wrestling Kerry and was laying on the mat wondering where Kerry was. He looked outside and Kerry was stumbling outside in the audience knocking over chairs.

Other than that nothing was mentioned. I like to see what the "E" is gonna say in their World Class dvd that's coming out. Still, buy the one off of Highspots. You will not be dissapointed.

I think they did reconize his death. I think for a few TV shows at the time they put a picture of him in the lower corner where the WWE logo is now.
I could be wrong

I still cant believe that Kerry lost his foot for being an idiot. He started his motorcycle with nothing but a pair of shorts (no sneakers or anything), crashed the bike and got his foot amputated.
Some people never learn, and Sadly Kerry was one of them.

kevin said that kerry's foot needed to be amputated right after kerry work up from surgery. turns out he crushed all the work that the doctors had performed trying to hop out of bed to get a hamburger

I knew he lost his foot because he crashed the bike but I did not know that.
