Time for another theme week. Now, most of my working life has been spent in grocery stores. And, these stores like to play music on the overhead speakers. And, this music is usually unoffensive. In fact, since I live in Arkansas, most of it has been either country music or Christian rock. Though, a good 99% of it has been popular pop songs over the last 60 years. But... every once in a while... I've heard a few songs that were not only really good but also quite confusing as to why they're being played in a grocery store. So, I decided to highlight these unusual choices for grocery store music. It's Unusual Songs I Heard At Grocery Stores Week. And, we begin with that classic, politically charged, apocalyptic punk rock song from The Clash, "London Calling." Yes, I heard this song a few times at the store I worked at back in my hometown of Nashville, AR. I don't know why someone thought this song which makes reference to Three Mile Island and the River Thames flooding and drowning everyone in London would be a good song to hear as you determine which cantaloupe is ripe enough. Either someone was playing a joke or had never heard the song. Anyway, here is the song. Enjoy.

Unusual Songs I Heard At Grocery Stores Week continues. Today's song I can sorta see why it would get played in grocery stores. It sounds nice and pleasant, and it's about Heaven. But, the lyrics make it a strange choice. Even though it is about Heaven, they talk about it being kind of a boring place where nothing happens. It's disparaging but sounds sincere. It's a weird song, and that's not surprising considering it's from the Talking Heads. So, here is "Heaven." Enjoy.

Unusual Songs I Heard At Grocery Stores Week continues. Now, a good reason why I find certain songs weird to hear at a grocery store is because of one simple fact: they're rock songs. Even though it's been one of the most popular genres of music since 1954, it's not a popular genre to be heard while shopping. Sure, there are a few rock singers who get played, like David Bowie or Bruce Springsteen, but it's usually their most pop sounding songs. However, not only have I heard a few good rock songs, but they've also some of the more suggestive of the genre, if you know what I mean. I'm talking about sex. This song is no exception. It's from Elvis Costello from his angry young man days, so it's a good, proper rock song. And, the song in question uses double entendres, with the phrase "pump it up" being used to refer both to turning up the volume on the music and to masturbation. In fact, the story in the song is about the narrator's sexual frustration at the hands of a femme fatale who's described in the lyrics as being "a bad girl" and "like a narcotic." So, yeah. This is an unusual song for the grocery store. And yet, I heard it frequently when I was working at that grocery store back in my home town. Anyway, enough talk. Here is "Pump It Up." Enjoy.

Unusual Songs I Heard At Grocery Stores Week continues. Today's song I only heard once at the store I used to work at in Nashville, AR, but once is enough to qualify for this week. Anyway, the song in question is Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall." Yes, I swear to God, I heard this playing on the overhead speakers of a grocery store. I don't know how this happened, but it did. And, I think it's fairly obvious why this is such a weird song to hear at a grocery store. So, here it is. Enjoy.

Unusual Songs I Heard At Grocery Stores Week continues. Today's song is an unusual choice to hear at a grocery store mainly for one reason: it's from Bob Dylan. Now, there's nothing wrong with him; he's a legendary musician. But, at the same, Dylan just doesn't get played at grocery stores. There's this righteousness to his songs that make it feel weird to play at such a symbol of consumerism. Still, I have heard this song played at the grocery I currently work at. So, here it is. It's "Tombstone Blues." Enjoy.

Unusual Songs I Heard At Grocery Stores Week continues. Today's song, much like yesterday's, just seems weird to hear at a grocery store not because of it's content but mainly because of who's singing it. I mean, when I think of music to play at grocery stores, Tom Waits is nowhere near that list. Yet, I've heard his famous hit, "Downtown Train" playing at the grocery store once or twice. It's a nice song, but Tom Waits just too cool to be played at grocery stores. It's just his nature. Anyway, here's the song. Enjoy.

Unusual Songs I Heard At Grocery Stores Week has come to an end. Ane, we end with what maybe the weirdest song I've heard at a grocery store. The reason: Well, I could somewhat see why they got played for the simple reason that someone just didn't listen to the lyrics that clearly. But this one, the people who chose it don't really have any excuse. It's pretty easy hear what the singer, Ian Curtis of Joy Division, is singing. And, there's the fact that song is called "Love Will Tear Us Apart." I mean, that's big indication this isn't a silly little love song. Another thing that makes is weird to play at a grocery store is the fact that the lyrics ostensibly reflect the problems in Ian Curtis's marriage to Deborah Curtis, as well as his general frame of mind in the time leading up to his suicide in May 1980. Meaning, the song about a bad marriage and suicide. Two things people love to think about when they go to buy milk. But, to be fair, this context wasn't probably known to whomever picked this song. Hell, for all I know, this song, along with the others, were probably randomly picked by a computer, which would explain a lot. Anyway, here's "Love Will Tear Us Apart." Enjoy.

For today, we have a 1990s video that takes place in a 1970s show that was set in the 1950s. I would say that it's like Inception, but that's cliche. And, it's not really like Inception, as that movie was about dreams. So, just ignore those last two sentences. Here's Weezer's "Buddy Holly." Enjoy.

For today, we have OutKast bombing Baghdad. I don't know why they would need to do that. The American Military would be doing that 3 years after the song came out. Anyway, here is "B.O.B." Enjoy.
