Thought I'd ask this question because a couple of the guys who went to NWA Legends Fanfest were discussing Virgil and how they had to ignore him because he's going to try and hustle them if they talk to him.
For a guy who was in some type of big time wrestling position from 1987-2000 I think Virgil had a pretty decent career. He was involved with the legendary DiBiase early on. Had a nice babyface run in the early to mid 90's and left WWF for WCW in 98 he joined the nWo and was around them until 1999 and eventually they used him differently from 99-00 and he was released from his contract.
From wrestling in front of 63,000 people at Wrestlemania 8 to now doing the Convention circuit. Now the Convention circuit isn't that bad I mean I'm sure it's a decent little pay day for a lot of guys and a good way to catch up but for Virgil it's a full time job. That's the sad thing.
I figure if Virgil just saved even 10,000 dollars a year from 1987 until 2000 and put it in a term deposit account the guy could be living in a nice town in a beautiful home maybe running a wrestling school or something and never have to work a full time job again. Instead he's seemingly blew hundreds of thousands of dollars and is now stuck on the Convention circuit.
The main issue with the V-Man though is he tries to con people into his signatures. To my knowledge no other wrestler even attempts this except Virgil.
For those unaware of how Virgil attempts to con people at Conventions here's a video where some Radio guys discuss it:
(Possible language warning)
So, Is Virgil the saddest wrestler going around today?

I'm not sure if he still does it, but I think he was working as a school teacher (or P.E. coach?) for a few years. So he's had other jobs since wrestling...
He's definitely not the saddest case in wrestling today. The saddest would be someone who's hopelessly drug-addicted like Axl Rotten and Balls Mahoney supposedly are, or broken down/crippled and living in poverty like Dynamite Kid.

Kamala is much sadder, but I guess he isn't doing a lot of going around.

I though I recalled one poster here who talked Virgil down on the price of a photo. My thoughts are, Virgil probably isn't making insane money doing this. If he puts money down for a table, and advertises photos for $20-30, since he wasn't a huge name, I would think most people would pass on him. Of perhaps just talked down to $10. Add in travel, hotel, food, he cannot be making more than if he worked an 8-hour day for $12. I could be completely wrong since I've never been to any signings/conventions/etc... But then again, would he be doing these if he wasn't making money? Or, is it just a guy who is still hoping he will get noticed for one more run?
I was listening to Domino's first interview on Colt's podcast last night and talked about how Virgil went to Allentown after WCW closed and the NWO wasn't relevant anymore and said "Hollywood Hogan sent me to Allentown to take care of some personal NWO business." The way Domino delivered it was awesome.

Yeah, tis a sad story, Virgil Wrestling Superstar. At least he was in the NWO.

I think Virgil has become for famous for that photo and everything after it than his actual wrestling career at this point.

On "Art of Wrestling Premium Edition 2", Colt gave his thoughts on Virgil. Basically saying that he believes it's a work and that Virgil is doing a lot better than people think. Similar to Iron Shiek, staying relevant using the power of the internet and their meme value.

Considering that Virgil has been doing these conventions and so forth for years and seems to not be strapped for cash I would say that he's doing really well for himself. Think about it, for like 90% of his mainstream career he was a flunky bodyguard that didn't wrestle that much and apparently can still get people to buy his autograph at conventions and somehow has built himself into an iconic figure in wrestling despite accomplishing mostly nothing and having one short TV run in the last 12 years or so.

I loved Sam Roberts' impression of Virgil's three card monty dealer approach to ringing up business.

The thing is, I absolutely never get the impression that Virgil HAS to do what he does to afford rent. I think he just A: Likes the connection to his old job that conventions bring, B: Has very little shame, and C: Is stingy.

The idea of virgil doing well fincially and doing this out of pure scoundrelism is hillarious to me.
