I'm feeling slightly better about the Matt Harvey news (he'll be back fine, most likely, and the Mets still have a lot of good young pitching going into next season), though I still feel like smashing my head with a cartoon mallet at the thought of it.
That said, the deal for Herrera lightens that up slightly. Good move for both teams, I like it.

Royals signed 1B Carlos Pena to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Omaha.

What happened with Harvey is the definition of a freak injury. Harvey was careful. The Mets used him responsibly with respect to his future health. It's just a really unfortunate situation no one could've helped prevent or seen coming.
That said, even if he does need Tommy John's, the surgery almost always benefits the pitcher long-term, in both performance and in staying healthy. Even if he's out for the 2014 campaign, he'll be back and likely better than ever for 2015.

Even if he's out for the 2014 campaign, he'll be back and likely better than ever for 2015. Oh yeah, it's the kind of tear that gets to tons of pitchers, regardless of what you do. I have every faith he'll be back, and back strong, in 2015, but the Mets still need to build in the meantime. What losing Harvey costs them in 2014 (beyond the obvious) is that it'll be tougher to deal some of their excess young pitching for a legitimate bat if you can't count of Harvey coming back. Still, there's lots of other avenues they can take. Also reading that the PTBNL in the Mets/Pirates deal will likely be a really good one for the Mets, so this trade could get REALLY nice. I really can't stand Mets fans who rag on Sandy Alderson, the guy has done almost everything humanly possible to finally put this team in a position to win, and for once in a position to win for more than, say, a short 3 year stretch before sucking again. A lot of Mets fans can't remember the last time we had a truly competent GM with a long-term vision, and somehow think that the team needs to be run the way that Steve Philips or Omar Minaya did it, which is just suicidal talk. I don't care if you weren't alive for the '86 title team, read up on how smart Frank Cashen was in constructing it, and realize it's basically what we need to do again. Meanwhile, Alderson keeps doing a solid job in trading vets for prospects: it's why we now have Wheeler, d'Arnaud, Syndergaard, etc., and now we may have a couple other pieces from a Pittsburgh team with a loaded farm system.

The 1st inning of the Tigers/A's game took 45 minutes. At this pace, the game would end at around 1:45 AM.

Cano just has a contusion on his left hand. X-Rays came back negative and he's day-to-day.
Caught a big break there.

Cardinals now 1.5 up on the Pirates, 4.5 ahead of the Reds. Since Yadier Molina came off the DL, St. Louis has gone 10-3.

I've seen Herrera play a few times this year and while he is good defensively (made a great diving catch in a game I watched last week), he needs to learn to take pitches better. He swings at some really bad pitches. He has some power but he would be hitting a higher average if he would be a little more patient at the plate. If he can learn to lay off those pitches, he has a great upside.

Jason Parks of BP thinks Vic Black will be the PTBNL in the Byrd deal. Seems similar to Parnell when he first came up (electric stuff, needs better control.)
Also, the money figure the Pirates are getting is reported to be 250K.
