Was watching Smackdown right now and realized that Randy Orton is a great champion. Whatever problems there are with the angle, with Daniel Bryan's haplessness or stupidity, with HHH being everywhere, Orton being the WWE champion is pretty great. Way better than Cena.

It's odd to me because Orton really isn't drawing much of a heel reaction at all, primarily because he really did nothing wrong to get the title. He really needed to be in on a conspiracy with HHH if they were turning him heel, rather than HHH graciously deciding to hand him the belt by attacking Bryan.
I think some of it is that Orton has been wrestling guys who are making him look like a million bucks. Christian and especially Rob Van Dam have been getting Orton over with a vengeance of late. Surprising there hasn't been a ton of praise for that RVD/Orton match from this week's SD, since it was just a crazy good match.

He's doing a good job because he doesn't have to bore everyone on the mic much he just goes out and has good matches and hits an RKO on Bryan. If he were having to cut heel promos every week the audience would be asleep.

Orton has been great in his role, but it needs to be remembered that he is essentially a plot device. He isnt getting the big heel reaction because he isnt the big heel. The feud is Daniel Bryan vs HHH.

The feud is Daniel Bryan vs HHH. I've been getting the same feeling. Even though Orton's the WWE champion, he feels like another flunky rather than the top heel of the storyline, more credible than the Shield but still in basically the same role as an enforcer for Triple H. And I think Orton actually works better this way compared to when he was the big villain in charge of the Legacy.

Hubba wha? Orton isn't some guy who needs people to make him look better. The really good matches he has (consistently I might add) is a mutual exchange of talent and ability. The brother gels really well with a lot of people and he has great chemistry. Orton's a talented guy in his own right, but I think it's fair to say that most of his best matches are with a smaller, faster guy who can bring some much-needed energy to the match.

Don't get me wrong, he is great in the role and its not like he isn't getting over as a heel because he is, but the main heel is HHH. Orton isn't doin anything wrong, it's just the way the story is balanced.

I just wish he'd "corporate" himself up more. Why is HHHs champion wearing a t-shirt and not shaving? Bring back smug, clean cut 2003/2004 Orton.

He's being used as a cardboard cut out to stand in the ring holding the title. For someone who's as dull as cardboard, he's finally found his niche.

He did not seem cardboard to me in his matches with Christian, Cody and RVD since winning the title. He's come across as cold and effective. It seems like even without The Corporation's support he'd be able to hold his own and defend his title capably. Contrast this with Daniel Bryan, who at this point I wouldn't trust to be able to exit a room if the door was closed. He runs into the door and falls down. He decides next time it will work. He runs toward the door harder this time, falls down. Walks into door, falls down, ad infinitum. It doesn't occur to him to try something different, he has no capacity for creative thinking or problem solving.

Throughout his face run he has been wrestling faces and beating them cleanly anyways. Eyepokes don't bother the audience. Hell they still pop for his buildup of the rko. Besides interactions with daniel bryan, he is still that same apex predator from last month.

I wish he'd change his theme, or at least remix it or something. Voices has been long overdue to be changed out anyway and the energy of it sounds pretty face-ish. Yeah, the words don't, but it just has a pretty inherently energy-building feel to it that doesn't really work. It's like how heel Batista should have dropped I Walk Alone but never did.

The overall theme has always had a sinister feel to it. The entrance also ihas becoe. Slimier. He walks with his nose up as if to say he is better than everybody. He just has a sleazier walk now.

Am I alone in thinking that going back to "Burn in my light" would be a good fit for his current persona?
