Folks were not arguing if the third is the best, just that thirds aren't always shitty

"Friday The 13th Part 3" was far from the worst of the F13 films.
"Final Destination 3" was my least favorite of that series, by far (mostly due to all of the highly unlikeable characters).
Home Alone 3 was shit, they shouldn't have even tried making one without Culkin (who was too old to play Kevin at that point).

Film snob pick- Three Colors: Red is sometimes seen as the best film of that trilogy or, if not better than Blue, at least more enjoyable since it's not so crushingly depressing.
And dammit, I liked all 3 Iron Man movies. Obviously, the first is the clear winner but the other two had their charms as well. And while I'm being contrary, I will strongly disagree with the OP's assessment on The Dark Knight Rises. Batman Forever was a better third movie than that one, in my book.

I disagree with your list. Plenty of thirds are considered better than 2, good, and in some cases the best of the series. Alien3 Look at the wrong person with his wrong opinion.

Also I loved Return of The Jedi more than Empire Strikes back, its all from a person personal perspective. To me Toy Story 3 was the best of the series followed by two than one

This far without mentioning Back to the Future: Part 3? It was a really solid film and easily worthy of its predecessors. I am not sure if that really counts as parts 2 and 3 were filming back to back, but on the other hand, it still was good. I hear mixed opinions about "The Hangover Part III," but my opinion is pretty much mixed as well. As a comedy, it didn't deliver, but as a thriller, it did kind of deliver and it had a decent storyline. My gripe was that Chow had a bigger role than in the first two and he was pretty much annoying.

Nobody's mentioned Rocky III yet? Not only is it not the worst of the series (often said to be Rocky V), it's actually pretty damn good.

As for Jedi, Personally, I prefer Empire, but that is taking nothing away from Jedi. Return of the Jedi is Gone with the Wind compared to everything that followed it.

I'll be honest I have never heard anyone say Mad Max 3 is the best in the series.

Goldfinger is a stand alone film so technically it doesn't count if we're talking legit sequels (this was also the time Bond became a super hero for better or worse)
Rambo III
Halloween III (I like it more upon further viewings)
Ice Age 3 (prolly my fav)
Jaws III

I'll be honest I have never heard anyone say Mad Max 3 is the best in the series. I knew one guy who not only thought it was the best but also believed another sequel couldn't even top it. I asked why. "Because no film could get Beyond Thunderdome."

There is no way to even suggest in jest that Iron Man 2 is better than Iron Man 3. Or that Alien 3 is better than Aliens. My goodness. To somewhat say what Ice Demon was saying, I think when you have a third film, you aren't dealing with just a movie that connects to another movie, you're at the make-or-break point of a franchise. As a result, there's too many cooks in the kitchen and the film-maker is burdened with the responsibility to both 1) give movie-goers everything they liked about the first two films and 2) give them something brand new that they enjoyed just as much about those first two films as well. I think Austin Powers in Goldmember is the shining example of how NOT to make a third film. From blowing its best ideas in the first ten minutes, to underbaking all the new characters to trotting out the same trademark sequences over and over to linking itself too much into dated reference in efforts to make this new installment seem fresh, it's a colossal misstep in absolutely every direction. Iron Man 2 was an Iron Man movie. Iron Man 3 was a Shane Black movie with a terrible twist. The humor was good, but it was not a good flick. it was an okay action movie, but it was a TERRIBLE Iron Man movie. if Shane Black didn't want to make an Iron Man movie he shouldn't have applied for the job in the first place. same goes for any film director that wants to make a movie about some established product but in the process they change everything about the character (see: John Dipshit Peters' ideas for Superman). if you don't want to actually make the character be like how they are in the source material, why even bother?

I'm talking more about established filmmakers who go around altering things to a ludicrous degree seemingly because they're ashamed of the source material. I remember reading James Cameron's "brilliant" script ideas for Spider-man, and they were pretty head-scratching. same with Jon Peters and the changes he wanted to make to Superman (which Tim Burton and then Brian Singer both told him to shove). I remember Neil Gaiman saying he read a Jon Peters-funded screenplay for a Sandman movie that was so far afield of the character he stopped reading 4 pages in and told them to go f*** themselves.

Good part 3s - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of The Sith Um, no. Or should I say NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (DO NOT WANT)! Prequel-wise, OK I can see your point. But all three of those films were turds. Disney and J.J. Abrams can't do worse, so I can't fear Episode VII. Blame Venom. They could have had Black Spidey face Sandman and New Goblin, then reject the suit when it makes him go too far. Eddie Brock turns into Venom at the end, then set-up for Spidey 4 to be Spidey vs. Venom. But Marvel had to insist on using him in the third movie, and in retaliation (I believe) Sam Raimi half assed the character. Watch Spectacular Spider-Man or the Fox series to see the Alien Costume saga done right, without using Secret Wars even. How is IM3 leading up to Avengers 2? Well if you didn't see the cracks in the armor by Spy Who Shagged Me, I could see why you'd be so overwhelmed at Goldmember's badness. But really, the second movie sent the franchise going into caricature/Flanderized territory. The first movie was the only really good one, IMO. Just like...Iron Man! IM2 is still better than 3...at least it gave us the "I want my bord" meme. What are your feelings about Batman Forever (another 3)? Granted the worst was yet to come, but like with the second Austin Powers, the new direction was in motion. Which leads me to augment Third Movie Syndrome with...Third Movie + New Director Syndrome (original Batman series, Iron Man, X-Men...)
