One thing that's consistent for both Disney and Pixar animated features the past 3 years or so is that the marketing is terrible. If I had seen an accurate Monsters University trailer I would've gone to see it rather than waited for video. Brave's marketing basically communicated nothing and the ads for Frozen and Tangled make them look thoroughly obnoxious. Winnie the Pooh was technically released but I wouldn't say that it was advertised at all. Wreck It Ralph's trailer sold a cool movie but it was a different movie where the real video game characters were all over the place and not just in a few scenes here and there (fwiw I think I like the Wreck it Ralph that we got better than the one that was sold). Disney's marketing of Winnie the Pooh was very odd. You're right, they barely marketed at all and it didn't make much money. Regardless it was well received critically. The marketing (including the naming) of Tangled had a lot to do with The Princess and the Frog. It did pretty well, but the top brass at Disney were expecting it to do better. Disney felt that the movie didn't appeal to boys. Therefore, Disney decided to change the planned title of Rapunzel to Tangled. The film's was still released as 'Rapunzel' in many markets outside of the U.S. Also, Disney's trailers and marketing materials focused a lot on the Flynn Rider character and the action scenes of the movie. This was a direct attempt to appeal to 'boys.' I think the title Frozen was chosen with the same mindset that led them to rename Rapunzel to Tangled. An early working title was The Snow Queen as the film is based on based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Snow Queen. I am sure Disney feared that 'boys' wouldn't be interested in a movie with 'Queen' in the title.

I think the approach to titles has been on the whole a good commercial decision, but I think trailers like Monsters University and Frozen that really misrepresent the films (negatively, imo), and don't even feature material from the films, are baffling. The Monsters U trailer made it seem like this I dunno awkward kids movie about raucous college partying and that for some reason made me feel uncomfortable and kept me away, then I see it and it's not about that at all. The Frozen trailer is like... Olaf and Sven being very very OOC and basically making it seem like some Dreamworks bullshit.

I saw this on Friday with my brothers and my little niece. Thought it was pretty good, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed some of the songs. My niece is pretty young yet and wanted more Olav the snowman in the movie, but I appreciate the way the first part of the movie didn't rely too much on the token goofy characters. Though the visuals with the snow, ice and water were really incredible. I think I enjoyed the film the most out of all of us. Also... {Spoiler}{Spoiler}I figured out the Prince would turn heel in the end and the audience seemed to really enjoy it when Anna punched him in the face.

Reminds me of a tumblr post where someone protested another white princess by photoshopping her to be black, and the response was to challenge the OP to find record of a black person in 1800s Norway

My siblings want to see it. I guess I'll take them, but I didn't like Wreck-It Ralph all that much so I'm cautiously optimistic. Reminds me of a tumblr post where someone protested another white princess by photoshopping her to be black, and the response was to challenge the OP to find record of a black person in 1800s Norway While a reasonable argument, one could easily flip it to find record of talking snowmen in 1800s Norway.

The sillier marketing of their recent films has a lot to do with Disney trying to compete with equally successful, lowbrow fare like Ice Age and the Chipmunks movies. But trailers/ads for their previous films, while they had a slightly stronger focus on the gravity of their stories, centered their advertising around its sidekicks as well.
Mulan was especially guilty of it, as Mushu, Yao, Ling and Chien-Po took up most of the TV spots when in reality there were a good amount of implied offscreen deaths, and the villain was one of their most brutal in recent memory. A lot of Hunchback ads focused on the Festival Of Fools and the gargoyles, and we all know what that was really like. Aladdin was on the more lighthearted side as a whole, but the Genie more or less carried the entire campaign (at least until the radio version of Whole New World shot up the charts).

Whatever single-adjective-titled fairy tale Disney has next, it's going to have a lot to live up to commercially and critically after Tangled and Frozen.

While a reasonable argument, one could easily flip it to find record of talking snowmen in 1800s Norway. Being that's related to the main reason I wasn't going to see it, didn't care to see it, nor was I going to take any of my family to see it? Sorry, that's not a reasonable argument. It wouldn't have even been if this was a real historical account let alone a movie based on a fairy tale which has origins that revolved around people who weren't white anyways. Why do people act like Black people was just on one continent until 1619?

Just saw this movie, it was really good. After seeing the Mickey Mouse cartoon at the beginning I want to see a full on Mickey Mouse movie though.

I saw it, it was awesome. {Spoiler}Awesome movie, I loved it. A great movie for kids and adults, and cinic adults. I love the twist that sibling love was the spell breaker, not romantic love, and how they are the anti fairy tale of love at first sight, getting enganged to someone you just meet is stupid, and this movie clearly states that. Though in the case of Cinderella, I can't blame her for taking a chance, it can't be worse than living with the evil step family. I dare anyone to not sheed a tear with Anna and Elsa backstories, I knew as soon as Anna left Hans in charage I knew he was a bad guy, but the reveal was done brillanet, they got me to doubt he was evil, and when he did out himself as a villain, he did in such a way that I screamed in my head "duchbag". I think Disney is already in the Star Wars mode, I thought Krisopher or however you spell his name, he reminded me of Hans Solo. When Elsa was trying to control in the beginning, my thought was where was Xavier when we needed him, she would be a perfect X - Man, I think I just wrote a MAD sketch. {Spoiler}

I went to Disney World over Thanksgiving with my wife and several of my relatives. My 6 year old cousin was IN LOVE with Elsa already and the movie wasn't even out yet. She waited in line for an hour or so to meet her at the Norway Pavilion in Epcot. Pictured here She sparkled even more in person.

That's Anna, Elsa's sister. I can't tell if she's elated or gassy, but she's somewhere in that zone.

I just got back from seeing this a second time. There was some stuff in the first 5 minutes or so that I totally didn't notice the first time, made the movie seem more complete.

I wonder if they do another movie in this universe. I would love to see this world expanded, are there more people with similar powers to Elsa. Maybe what I am asking is too risky, don't mess with perefection or close to perfectiong, what about a movie about a princess with power to make fire. Now a days fire especially princesses that can make fire are stereo type as evil, Flame Princess, Princess Azula as prime examples, and fire is know for destruction, with snow you saw what a a beautiful ice castle, make pretty snow flakes, a snow man, I don't what the fire equeverlents of those things can be. But that would be a good challenge. Not really a sequel, but an expanation on the universe with a new cast, though Elsa and Anna could make cameos. {Spoiler}Maybe Hans can play a central role and have a redemption story, if Iago and Anastansa can get a chance of redemption, why not Hans? I can legitly imagine as punishment being stripped of his title, thrown out of his royal family and start over as pesisent, get humbled a bit. I wonder about the box office numbers, is it number one movie in america right now? If not, it should in the top 2. If it is number 1, I hope he stays at number 1 until it is unseeded by the soon to be classic Madea's Christmas. That would be a great commentary on pop culture if that actully happened.

Ok...Went to see this yesterday. This is the best Disney Movie Musical I've seen in theaters in years. I know that seems like a LOT of qualifiers, but I wanted to somehow distance it from Wreck-it Ralph. This to me is a return to what brought Disney "To the Dance", a big showy musical version of a fairy Tale......and it just plain WORKS. ~ Idena Menzel KILLS it as Elsa, and Let It Go is Oscar-Bait like mad. Not a bad thing either as it's arguably the best song of the film. ~ The Story is good, simple, but effective ~ Olaf is surprisingly NOT annoying (To me anyway) especially since Josh Gad is Hit or Miss with me (Also, great B'way casting there) ~ Speaking of, the Broadway/Theater Cred of the main cast is ASTOUNDING! Johnathan Groff, Idena Menzell, Kristin Bell, Josh Gad, Santino Fontana,....Seriously..... Nearly all but one of these folks have been Nominated for a Tony, and you can see why here. {Spoiler}Spoilers from Here on out ~ Bucking the "Rescue the Princess" plot made me happy.
~ It's FUN! Too often Disney tries to be low-brow to keep pace with other Animated fare, Here Disney basically says "f*** that! We're Disney Dammit! We CAN and WILL make an animated movie you can see and ENJOY with the whole family again"
~I wish I hadn't had the Princes Heel Turn spoiled for me......It was obvious from context he wasn't completely trustworthy......but it's the Line he gives before and him putting out the fire.////it just hits you that this guy's very nearly a complete monster.
~ "The Cold never Bothered me Anyway"
~ Gonna gush about Menzel's "Diva Song" anyway.....That's how you end an Act 1. Pure and simple, THAT is how you make a "Disney Award-Winning Songtm" Its an Anthem, a "Villain Song" (For a given value of Villainy), a Torch song........It's the "Part of Your World" that people will be singing if nothing else from this movie for YEARS.
~ I wish I'd gone to the 3D version. I Will usually NEVER say that, but I was awestruck by the style here, and I think it actually woul have looked AWESOME in 3D.....especially the Medium bending Mickey Mouse Short that plays beforehand and th first scene where they saw thru the Ice
~ Seriously...there's an EFFING Mickey Mouse Cartoon preceding it! No reviews mentioned it, nobody did! I hope this is a trend though....It's classic "Asshole Mickey" too.

~ I wish I'd gone to the 3D version. I Will usually NEVER say that, but I was awestruck by the style here, and I think it actually woul have looked AWESOME in 3D. Both times I saw it in 3D, and I must admit that it was a really great experience. Frozen will be the first title I get on Blu-ray 3D, because I know that I'll at least want the option of seeing it in 3D, though right now I lack both 3D player and tv. That said, I think the real beauty of this film is in its character animation, and I can't wait to be able to watch it over and over again at home without having to pay $8 each time. I hope they don't cheap out on extras and produce a really good special edition with galleries, documentaries, deleted scenes, commentaries, etc. Seeing the LD boxes I have on display makes me really wish I could buy a similar edition of Frozen to go alongside Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella and Pocahontas.
