I've been watching a lot of videos tonight. Shoots, highlights, clips, and certain moments.
I've watched shoots from Heyman, Cornette, Bret and HBK, and various other people in wrestling in regards to Vince. Some I've seen plenty of times before. I've watched segments with him and the Divas and him having people kiss his ass. I've watched a lot of him on commentary with JR and the King.
But I just watched the clip of Jim Ross getting drafted to Smackdown. Now I've seen this many times before but it just hit me tonight for some odd reason.
Do you respect Vince McMahon? The man has stolen ideas and talent from countless people, humiliated loyal employees, and pretty much cheated on his wife in front of millions of people. You could say he was playing a role...but in that man's sick mind, it was probably done for "the lulz" as the kids used to say.
The fact that he knew JR didn't know and strategically made sure the camera would catch his reactions and cut him off before he even had time to react on the mic just shows you how sick this man is.
What do you think of Vince McMahon?

He's George Lucas.
He had the initial spark of an idea, but it needed the right people around him to make it the best it could be.
But as time went on and he got more powerful, he surrounded himself with sycophants and yes men, who wouldn't question him, and that was fine by him, because he didn't want to hear any dissent.
And the product suffered because of it. It became bland and stale. The new product was so bad, it damaged the fond memories of the old product.
It became empty and mechanical. Just going through the motions and relying on the brand name to sell an inferior product.

I doubt this forum or at least 90% of us would be here right now if not for him.

I think he's a man whose success is defined by who he surrounds himself with. Over the years if he's surrounded himself with decent people he's done well. When he's surrounded himself with morons - he hasn't. I'm not sure how much ownership he has over his success in that regards. That's not knocking him necessarily but I think he tends to stumble upon a good idea every now and then by accident rather than design.

As a business man, I respect the hell out of him. He must have a work ethic that's out of this world when it comes to running a company like WWE; I wouldn't want all that pressure on my back for a day, let alone how long he's been in the business.
As a person though? I don't think I could stand him. He seems to get a kick out of bullying people he feels like & definitely has an alpha-male attitude towards life, where I am more laid-back. I wouldn't want to ever work for him, as I feel that's a workplace environment that would be hard to enjoy under his watch.
The Vince McMahon character on TV was gold though; notice how I put 'was' there , because that character hasn't been good since maybe 2001, yet it still get's dragged out every year to supposedly "bring a rating". I hate it. McMahon will hopefully realise sooner than later that the time for that character on TV is long gone & the same goes for the authority figures in general. They are completely played out now & need a break. I just want wrestlers to feud with wrestlers for reasons like ... I dunno ... they hate each other? any story will be better other than 'authority figure fights rebellious wrestler'.

He has some questionable business practices. Paying bodybuilders six-figure salaries, plus health insurance benefits while wrestlers were crippling themselves without the perks for $50 per TV appearance - did speak of skewed priorities.

He's an insane lunatic, but dammit he's our insane lunatic.
He got to the top by being cutthroat, ruthless, and having an insane work ethic.

He is somebody who is ruthless, competitive, and highly driven. He'll do anything to make money. Despite being an innovator in his time, he's very set in his ways. He's capable of genuine warmth and terrible cruelty. He wants the world to see him as a calm professional, but he's very much a man governed by his emotions--especially his anger. He cares about his employees, but he also coldly views them as absolutely expendable. Sometimes he'll go out of his way to do a nice thing and other times he'll go out of his way to humiliate somebody. He's also a boy from a poor, southern background who wants the world to believe that he's a sophisticated, rich, northeasterner. He truly loves old-school style wrestling--or believes that he does--but he just doesn't think it can be the center of a worldwide company. He thrives off control and he wants to be able to control everything from his employees to the very history of the industry.
Almost Paradoxically, he doesn't take himself too seriously.
It's hard to make a moral judgment about him. He's a flawed human being, like the rest of us. He's done some things that make him look like a saint and he's done other things that make him seem like the devil. He's somewhere in between, most likely.

Just going through the motions and relying on the brand name to sell an inferior product. That might just be the best description of either man I have ever read. I respect Vince's accomplishments and work ethic, and hearing stories from Foley, Jericho, Bret, Shawn, and others paints the picture of a man as capable of amazing acts of kindness as he is of overwhelming cruelty. He's an enigma.

I understand respecting him for Wrestlemania and helping make the WWE so successful blah blah.
But as a person...I dunno. I'm sure he's purposely placed himself into storylines with Divas just so he could make out with them. I'm sure the Kiss my Ass Club was made to mess with people he had problems with at the time. The on air humiliation of loyal employees who have given everything to his company.
Just seems like Vince gets this weird pass.
"Oh it's just Vince being Vince"
I dunno.

Vince is human, like all of us.
I consider myself a nice guy, but as recently as within the last week I've done some awful shit that would warp someone's opinion of that.
For every story of Vince being an asshole, I hear another story of him being a gentleman.
Sure he stole ideas from ECW - but he also pumped money into their company and did talent exchanges.
Sure the drugs testing policy in WWE may be iffy - but he still provides free rehab to any former talent who wants it.
And I'll say this much - any man who can put aside a decade long feud to ring Jeff Jarrett and offer condolences after his wife died has some level of class.
Given that WCW would occasionally make jokes about real life deaths on their hotlines and TV shows (and I say this as a WCW mark) Vince is still the not quite the promoter devil we all think he is.
Plus when you start comparing his actions to those of basically any other promoters in history, including Paul Heyman, you realise he is probably the least scummy in a field of scumbags. Only people I can think of who might be less scummy are the ICP, who seemingly only book talents they want to wrestle with, matches they want to see and show huge amounts of respect to the talent.

No gimmick or character they create will be as fascinating to me as real life Vince Mcmahon.
