So this week alone there was news that Wonder Woman has been cast in the next Superman/Batman movie, the trailer for the newest Spider-Man film was released, internet buzz has already begun for a big X-Men universe film with Apocalypse as the villain.
It seems like every week there's some big news about the next big budget Hollywood comic book action movie and television franchise.
Do you think that there are too many comic book movies nowadays?
Here's a list of movies that have been released since the first Blade movie (in 1998):
30 Days of Night, 30 Days of Night: Dark Days, 300, Alien vs. Predator, Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, The Avengers, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Blade 2, Blade: Trinity, Captain America: The First Avenger, Catwoman, Constantine, Cowboys vs. Aliens, Daredevil, Elektra, Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Green Lantern, Hellboy, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, Hulk, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Jonah Hex, Judge Dredd, Kick Ass, Kick Ass 2, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Men in Black 2, Men in Black 3, The Punisher, Punisher: War Zone, R.I.P.D., Red, Red 2, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Sin City, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Spirit, Superman Returns, Man of Steel, Thor, Thor: The Dark World, V for Vendetta, Wanted, Watchmen, X-Men, X2: X-Men United, X3: The Last Stand, X-Men: First Class, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine.
And here's a list of movies that are set to come out over the next five years:
Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Fantastic Four, Batman vs. Superman, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, X-Men: Apocalypse, Avengers 3.
I get that Hollywood likes to run an idea into the ground. Just look at how many supernatural killer films there were in the late 70s through the early 90s. But it seems like Hollywood's not slowing down any time soon.
So what do you think? Do you want more of them? Less? Do you wish they'd go away altogether? Do you want different kinds of comic book movies (say, characters from DC's Vertigo line)? Do you think more comic book properties should be on TV instead?

No one is forcing me to see them so it doesn't really bother me. I like my Marvel movies and I'll continue to watch them.

Yes. Way, way, way, way too many. So basically, I haven't seen a movie in ten years because they're all comic book movies and I give less than a shit about Batman, Superman, X-Men, or anyone else. Seriously. f*** them.

Nope If I don't like a comic a movie is based on (Like Thor or Ghost Rider), I just won't bother seeing the movie. Both those characters have fans who will like a movie based on them though so I can't bitch about it. I can bitch about their been no Runaways or Great Lakes Avengers movie yet though I'm for comic book movies because, the more there are, the more chance some of the lesser known but still awesome characters will get a chance to appear on the big screen. Like Batroc the Leaper. I really want him to appear in a Marvel movie at some point because he's awesome.

This is like saying there's too many movies based on written works. I don't get the complaint. It's not like they're actively preventing other movies from being produced. If you don't like them, you don't need to see them. If you think there's nothing else to watch beside comic book movies, you're not looking hard enough. In fact, you're not even trying.

The problem is not that there are so many comic book movies, it's that they're so generic.
Half the time while watching these movies, I feel like the gist of these plots could be exchanged with others to little effect. Nothing of real emotional worth happens in half of these. The world crumbles, but the stakes still feel so low and unexciting. It's like everything has to just run through the motions of being big budget and trying to make a grandiose statement when some should just be silly fun and content with it. Others should try something weird; think about Batman Returns for a second, and then think about how that movie would NEVER be made today. That's a major shame.

It's become its own genre now. It's like asking if there are too many comedies or Westerns. No, cuz a)it's its own things now and b) there's obviously a market for it.
Besides, any story can be a comic, and given the commonalities of comics and film, I'm surprised it's taken this wrong really for movies to embrace comic movies as a genre, and superheroes as a subset of that.

That is pretty much called action movies. And yeah, most all of them do a "hero's journey" then a "hero's fall" then "hero's redemption".

Are there too many animated movies? You get more of them in a year than you do comic book movies. And that's not even taking into account that comic books are just a medium and can take any tone, so a movie like Road to Perdition will be completely different than The Dark Knight Rises.
And I know it's the internet and hyperbole is normal, but we had what, 5 comic book movies last year, amid the hundreds of movies released? And even then, a movie like Dredd is going to be nothing like The Avengers. I think what you were trying to get at is superhero movies in particular because they happen to be in vogue at the moment, but even then, there are thousands of movies in that same time frame that aren't superhero movies. You can't really act like they're taking up a huge chunk of the theater at any given time.

I think the studios and Disney/Marvel especially are shooting themselves in the foot by putting out so many high budget ones so close together. People will get burned out on them, if they're not already.
That's assuming that we're just talking superhero adaptations anyway. I want my Fables and Y: The Last Man movie. And a proper Hellblazer one while we're at it.

Too many about the same material, perhaps. I can't recall the last time a comic not Marvel or DC based was made into a movie. Sin City, maybe?

I think there's way too many of them. I remember way back when it was a big deal if a new Batman, Superman, etc. movie was coming out. Now that seems just like a normal Friday. 'Nerd culture' in general has over saturated the market at this point, in my opinion.

Too many DC/Marvel superheroes that we've seen before.
I've seen every origin story from every big property (some of them 2-3 times) - at this point when I see a Marvel/DC property get a film, I immediately don't care.
Now, if they were to pick some NEW non-superhero properties to draw inspiration for a movie from, I'd be down. I hate that comics have to = superheroes. Superhero is just a genre within the medium of comics.
It is CRIMINAL that Chew didn't get made into a series, but it would be a very entertaining movie. Morning Glories would make a phenomenal Netflix series.
As far as comic-to-movies though: Top Cow's THINK TANK would be perfect right now. I'd love to see a super weird PROPHET movie made, the current Brandon Graham version, not the Liefeld original series. I haven't seen a proper trippy sci-fi film in a while. There's a miniseries going right now called "ZERO" which would work so well as a movie. Revival (though it was slated to be a TV show before ABC ripped off the creators and basically stole the idea after negotiating with them) Old City Blues from Archaia - holy shit, this would crush as a cyber punk cop drama!
The list goes on, but the point is its not comic book movies that I'm sick of, just re-re-re-re-re-re-remade superhero films and uber branded, synergy infused franchise films that on their own are so-so, but basically exist to lift up the franchise as a whole. blech.

Here's my way of thinking: If you don't like them, just don't watch them. I don't understand why people have to complain about this when it's easier just to skip watching them. Plus, when I made that thread about comic book movies that a lot didn't realize were comics at first, it just shows how there are a lot more out there than one would realize. Personally, I don't have a problem with them because I am a comic book fan, but if something doesn't appeal to me, I just won't watch it.
The funny thing about non-comic book fans is that some don't realize that comic books aren't just superhero fare. I made a mention about "2 Guns" in my thread because I had no idea that was a comic book before seeing it. I found out that it was a comic when I watched the credits when I saw it in theaters back in August. However, it made me want to check it out, I bought the trade but I still have yet to read it.
On the other hand, I can see why some people are annoyed about how every year, there's a new Marvel movie coming out, or maybe even a few. If it bothers you that much, go watch something else, nobody's making you watch it.
