They should do an angle where some new rookie keeps doing the job and some old great wrestler like maybe jake the snake takes him under his wing because he sees something great In him and helps him all the way to a wrestlemania main event. It would be a great heartwarming story. They could make it be like a 2 year build. They could show the rookies struggles with losing a match and wanting to give up but the old wrestler encourages him to go on. Maybe sometime the old wrestler is gone when the rookie needs him so he gets ticked about that.

They should have been doing this ages ago. If the old wrestler can talk, it gives them a useful purpose when their active career is over.

I've always been a fan of this concept. I loved Harley Race managing Vader. jake roberts introduced as the dutch mantell of the wyatt family I'd mark so hard for this, but it would also completely negate Bray Wyatt.

WWF tried using Mr. Perfect as a mangager to Hunter Hearts Harlem back in the day that didn't really work but I like the idea of it.

I think WWE gave up on the "old wrestler takes a protege" angle ever since the disaster that was Rockabilly.

I don't think it works terribly well as an old wrestler is likely to be good at getting himself over but little experience getting someone else over. The great managers - Heenan, Heyman, Cornette - were never wrestlers or at least weren't to any great/significant extent. I think learning to shill for someone else is an art that is perhaps beyond those preconditioned for their entire careers to shill for themselves.

I think WWE gave up on the "old wrestler takes a protege" angle ever since the disaster that was Rockabilly. Dreamer and Colin Delaney also springs to mind as a notable failure, and Bossman/Buchanan. Hardcore Holly and Cody kinda worked though. The problem always tends to be the old veteran outshines the rookie.

Ric Flair manages Zack Ryder.
They communicate solely through woos, like they are Pokemon.
[Ryder turns around to ask flair for advice midmatch. Flair starts shaking his fists enthusiastically]
"Woo! woo woo woo woo woo!"
"Woo?"
"Woo!"
"Woo woo!"
[Ryder attacks his opponent's weak point. Commentary sells Flair's genius management in dead seriousness].

One of the things that I think TNA did right with Ric Flair was originally put him in a managerial position.
Because as crazy as the man is he can still make just about anything sound important.
Now putting him with AJ Styles and transforming him into Flair light wasn't really good... but the idea of Flair managing someone I think could work.

I don't blame anyone for forgetting this, but they tried this with Miz and Ric Flair a few months ago.
Of course, Miz is so terrible that it almost instantly flopped. And it doesn't help that Flair is a pathetic shell of his former self.
It could work though, I could definitely get behind Jake the Snake helping out the Wyatts.

Flair also wasn't really around as a manager I think he showed up like once or twice and then Miz started doing the figure four....

Hillbilly Jim was OK with the Godwinns.
I liked Harley Race with Luger.
