Working to a design document is difficult when you have to work to ludicrous restrictive notions so I don't think we can blame the artist on this given I'm pretty certain the fellow would have been handed 20 pages of ideas and specifications for use & application with not much room for error. Point taken, I'm not laying blame anywhere, just saying the designs themselves kinda suck. But then the scratch logo does as well. Oh sorry, I didn't mean for that to seem like a "don't say anything negative" reply as I entirely agree that most of the logos look like steaming garbage, just one of those moments where I feel bad for most people working for major companies on such things. Then I realize they'll be paid more for that one logo than I will in 36 months work with no days off and my moment of pity turns to frustration.

Looking at them again, I don't know why but row 1 column 3 instantly makes me think WCW for some reason. Row 4 column 1 looks like it should be on some 1960's premium engine oil can.

The black and red logo on white looks pretty good (first image) for corporate documents or anything else with a white background, but I don't really care for it with the lighting/steel effect. It looks like there's a clear "do not display the 'e'" mandate from WWE. From the logo sheet, I kind of like the 2nd one from last (with the elongated top W). None of these wow me, though. I think it was V1 on here who made a more appealing logo.
From seeing the real-world sample images, specifically the Cena on tv one, I'd like to see a faded light-gray logo used in the corner opposed to the current white/red one. I hate how they still, in 2013, have to push it towards the middle due to SD 4:3 ratios.

I like the 2nd and 6th more than what they went with though I understand not wanting to change too much from what is a logo known worldwide. The rest look too much like fast food or sporting goods logos as mentioned.

I do not mind the logo at all. After all, it is just a logo.
If WWE spent less of their budget on an award winning logo maker and more on a competent writing staff, I would be more interested.

My favorite is easily third row down, on the end. That one is very, very nice.
In general, I think most of these are better than the one they went with. A couple are far worse.

How uncreative can someone whose job it is to be creative, be? As someone who has worked in a job that includes logo designing it often doesn't matter how creative you are, you're usually given a strict set of demands for what the logo must look like.

Logos are really hard to design, especially if it's replacing an existing one. I've had some limited experience with that process and it's really tough. Even once you decide on a new logo, it never really looks right. Then you start using it for a while and it just becomes the norm and you can't imagine not having it. Did anyone like Pepsi 's current logo when they first saw it? Now it's just their logo and it would be weird if they used anything else.
With all that being said though, it still is rather strange that they have no desire to work the E into the logo, especially considering how obsessed they are with the "we're entertainment" talking point.
