I bought this game like two years ago simply because I wanted to play the story again, it was a bit disappointing remembering all the hours I spent working at beating that game when I was 11 and it first game and then beating the entire story in like four hours on the hardest difficulty now that I'm an adult. Still, a whole lotta fun.

SYM is actually my favorite of the PS2 wrestling games. I think it's in my top 5 wrestling games.

I think they're both great games, and the preference comes down to what you want to do while playing them. HCTP made it easier to play as the entire roster and build other guys up while you focused on moving your main guy up the card. HCTP also allowed for your CAWs to fair better in story mode. Finally, it didn't have the automatic pre-determined storylines every time (nWo, Vince and Flair teaming) so you had more year long freedom in that regard. Finally, the reversal system was MUCH better in HCTP.
Otherwise, SYM had the better roster (both rosters are outstanding and probably the best two rosters in any North American wrestling game), a better create-a-wrestler selection, a longer storymode, and more options for multi-player action if you're playing with friends.
Overall, there's no wrong answer between the two. I remember reviews at the time citing SYM as the first showing of what its generation of wrestling games was capable of, and HCTP showing essentially all that could be done on that generation. While it's really tough for me to decide, I give the advantage to HCTP by the absolute slightest of margins.
