How is this "Well the South is stupid" considered an okay thing to say when talking about tolerance? I'm technically from the South (Virginia), but would you believe that I'm not an ignorant racist human being? SHOCKER FAN! SHOCKER! Just because you're from a certain place doesn't mean you act or think a certain way. The line of thinking from some people is just as closed-minded as what people are accusing other people of. That said, in everything I've ever seen Phil (or any of the Duck Dynasty people for that matter) in, they've never come off as hateful people. Obviously that could be the product of marketing or editing, but I've never gotten the impression that Phil is a bad guy. What he said in that interview? Clearly it's controversial and misguided. Comes off as more ignorant than mean-spirited. Everyone absolutely has the right to be offended by what he said, just as he had the right to say it. I just can't bring myself to be mad at the dumb shit people say anymore. I think that's what pisses me off a lot about this. This just reaffirms the stereotype that all of us southerners are racist, homophobic assholes. And you know, the South needs to improve in a lot of ways. But there's a lot of good people here who DO NOT subscribe to that ignorant ideology.

In fact slapping stupid, ignorant people on the back by telling them HEY MAN FREEDOM OF SPEECH MORE POWER TO YA rather than getting to the core reason of what they have a problem with the way people are born is contributing to the problem.

To the people quoting me I'll address you both.
It's his right to say whatever he wants. If he gets his show in trouble than so be it, either way I have no hand in it. I don't like the show, I don't agree with what he said, but I also don't get butthurt because someone said something that is either stupid or differs from my opinion.
secondly yes, respect is the right word. I respect people who aren't afraid to speak their minds even though its going to piss people who disagree with them. The made spoke his mind and more power to him to do so, it's not his fault you're offended by it, it's not my fault you're giving him any attention. I respect YOU for disagreeing with him and speaking your mind.
More people should treat each others with respect regardless of opinions.

It didn't even take 24 hours for the backlash to begin. According to Fox News, A&E has suspended Robertson indefinitely.

I'm not even sure what point you're even trying to make. We are using our freedom of speech. I believe, wholeheartedly, that this guy is a f***ing moron and if he loses his show, good. Freedom of Speech doesn't absolve you of consequences. If I say that Hitler was a great guy, I deserve to be called an asshole. Then we're in agreement, obviously. Some people, not on this forum particularly, would love to take things further. Again, nobody on this forum has ever said anything endorsing the contrary, so it's a bit unclear what point you felt compelled to try to make with your post in this thread.

And this racist homophobic gentleman of nobility has been suspended.
"A+E Networks, parent company of A&E, has released the following statement to Variety: “We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty. His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community.”"
The future of the Duck Dynasty brand will be interesting to watch now that it's explicitly racist and anti gay.

I think the BTK Killer committed some horrible atrocities, but you have to respect his attention to detail, zen-like patience, skillful craftsmanship and dedication to follow through on a plan, right? It's not his fault you think murdering families is wrong. Also, don't confuse him with the B2K killer:

I acknowledged that it wasn't from this forum. Second sentence. It's simple: Some people on other forums were saying that he should be jailed for speaking his mind. That's ridiculous. I was, like several others, reiterating his right to free speech and other people's right to oppose him with their own free speech. We seem to be having a pretty open-ended discussion about this whole ordeal at the moment.

It's only a matter of time now before those retailers that stock "Duck Dynasty" gifts and apparel start to put it all in mothballs, and people who bought that gear start to leave it at home.

There is a war going on in the Off Topic section,
Not a war between positive and negative, nor is it a war between wait-and-see and cynicism. It's a war of tight vs loose.
The Tight Army are the ones who do not like to engage in gay sex, the Loose Republic are those that don't mind getting poked up their butt chutes every so often.
I've been on both sides, but my heart lies with bestiality sex with Kurt Angle, who ironically isn't a fan of the black people.

I think that Duck Dynasty is too popular and generates so much money that A&E will be forced to just deal with whatever negative publicity or pressure comes from the opinions of the stars of the show. Money talks. These guys are everywhere and very popular. Nothing will come from this.
Believe me, there would be WAY more outrage if A&E dropped the show. It just seems the crowd that is not offended by those comments are the more vocal, visceral, and reactionary crowd.

There is absolutely no respecting an opinion that isn't worthy of respect. Abusing free speech with dangerous, stupid points of view isn't worth defending.

As much as I enjoy the B2K reference (Bump Bump Bump was the go-to jam for Middle School dances), we just went hardcore into strawman territory. Coincidentally, this man has no opinion on the subject:

Money talks. These guys are everywhere and very popular. Nothing will come from this. That's the thing. Something already has come from this. He's been indefinitely suspended by the network. The show is now associated with this guy's wacky, outlandish, racist, offensive thoughts. That's going to have an impact on the show's sponsors, who ultimately have a lot of sway. If the big-money sponsors start backing out, then the show is put on life support, regardless of the ratings smash it is.
