I still like Bob's Burgers and Venture Brothers, but it seems like the cartoons designed specifically for adults seem to be going downhill quality-wise as compared to the ones aimed at a more general audience (ie, regular show, adventure time, etc). I mean, i tried watching that Rick and Morty show on adult swim and it seemed pretty much like a ripoff of Seth McFarlane's shows, only with a sci-fi twist, along with very few likable characters, and i cant remember the last time i watched ATHF, yet i'll constantly laugh and enjoy stuff like Uncle Grandpa and Wander Over Yonder just to name a couple of shows. Its just odd that the shows generally considered "kid's shows" (i consider them aimed at general audiences) have more appeal than the shows aimed at adults IMO.

Family Guy unfortunately proved that you don't need good animation, a plot, interesting characters, or snappy writing to be a hit. But I'd argue that outside of Seth Macfarlane's crap, and Robot Chicken, there's a lot good adult animation out there.
You mentioned Bob's Burgers, which is awesome. I'd also suggest AXE COP on Fox's Saturday Night ADHD. Absolutely hilarious show.

Axe Cop is excellent. Caught the "preview" of it last night at the end of Animation Domination and it was hilarious. I would love to see it put in prime time (my local FOX affiliate doesnt air the Sat. night block for some reason). I wonder how legit the "created by a 5 yr old" backstory is.

I wonder how legit the "created by a 5 yr old" backstory is. Half Legit. It's based on a comic. From the foreword of a collection I have it seems that basically the guy who wrote the comic would go up to his younger brother who was playing with his toys and make a note of what scenarios and characters he was coming up with and then write the comic based on that.

Bob's Burgers is brilliant but everything else I've seen the last couple of years is mediocre to terrible. American Dad seems to have lost it, which is a shame.

Heavy 2nd for ARCHER. One of the best shows on tv. Anything voiced by H. Jon Benjamin is automatically better than your average live-action show.
I think what it comes down to is networks really cinching their belts. Animation, on the whole, is more expensive than shooting a live action show, so unless they're pretty sure it'll be a hit they won't risk making it.

there;s still a lot of solid comedies out there like Venture Bros or Archer. i just wish people would be more willing to try animated action or drama more. it's one of the reasons I watch so much anime, it's like the Japanese are the only culture that's willing to give that kind of thing a try. it looked like it might pick up over here in the late 90s when we had stuff like HBO's Spawn series or the Maxx or the Oddities, but that stuff fell off really quickly and nobody's tried doing it since.

Archer is still f***ing brilliant, Bob's Burgers is great, so as long as we have shows with Jon Benjamin I don't think we have anything to worry about for adult animation.

Ditto. Imagine what a show like 24, X-Files or Once Upon a Time would be able to pull off in animation. I love Boondocks and Venture Bros and Family Guy is a guilty pleasure of mine, but I agree, kids' cartoons are starting to leave most adult shows behind when it comes to creativity (and likable characters for that matter). Stuff like Adventure Time, MLPFIM and Wander Over Yonder have found ways to reach all audiences in their writing styles, so no one feels like they're being talked down to anymore. The days of Get Along Gang are pretty much done.

I think its really that there are just so many adult oriented animated shows now. The audience is over-saturated so the quality is starting to burn out a bit. Color me a downer, but I personally think it is long since time for The Simpson's to hang it up, and I think Family Guy and maybe even South Park could end their runs as well.

The days of Get Along Gang are pretty much done. oh it's been that way for a while. the DC Animated Universe and the Avatar franchise (the real one, not James Cameron's love-letter to somnambulism) have some of the deepest and most intelligent plot/characterization I've ever seen. and they don't need to include any toilet humour, blood or swearing to do it. it's like... the kids' cartoons are actually more mature than the stuff on Adult Swim.

I love Simpsons and Family Guy still. But Archer is the best adult cartoon there is. The downside is that the wait in-between every season is SO. INCREDIBLY. PAINFUL.

The adult cartoons have their place, but the nature of content on supposed kid's shows has changed drastically in the past ten years. The novelty of an animated how tackling adult themes has largely worn off, especially when you have a show like the Last Airbender addressing themes of war, redemption, and family better than many live action television shows. In all likelihood we're heading towards a landscape where its not "kid's cartoons" and "adult cartoons" but things up and down the spectrum.

Archer is one that I keep seeing on Netflix and want to watch, but I find something else. At some point, I will watch.
