I usually go with the schoolgirl and the creepy gimmick character. Beauty and the Beast, if you will.

If there is a catgirl I will immediately use them.

Depends on the game, but usually it's a mid-range poker Vega is my main in SF games, although I dabble with others lie Rolento. In Soul Calibur, it's Mitsurugi and Voldo, so mid ranger and freak.

I generally play tanks/brawlers in everything I play, not just fighting games. I like to be able to shrug off a few shots before I send one back. I absolutely despise being squishy. Bonus points if they have taped fists.

I like using wrestler characters, if available.

In Street Fighter, I use Guile and Cammy. In Mortal Kombat, I use Kensh, Kung Lao, and Kitana.

I like characters with charge-up skills. I'm not sure what that would fall under.

I'm not a great fighting game guy, but I love to zone because I enjoy punishing mistakes. I also like being the different stance guy because when I'm playing with friends I can normally psyche them out the first couple times.

Usually I just diddle around with characters I find cool and try to figure out who I can best get the hang of. In Soul Calibur I go with Voldo, Kilik/Xiba and Astaroth, Chun-Li and Blanka in Street Fighter, Kazuya, King and Asuka in Tekken and Iori/Mai/Ash in KOF.

Either a female wrestler, like Tina and Jaycee, or school girls like Asuka, Lili, and Sakura

My main in Rival Schools was Hinata, so I guess schoolgirl speedster. I do tend to prefer those over stance users, though I also like grapplers.

Outside of the aforementioned catgirls I tend to pick quick characters like Ibuki for SF or Talim for Soul Calibur.
Also any crazy chick, like Juri for SF or Tira for SC.

Ryu for all Street Fighters...or "other Ryu"...I mean Ken.
Sub Zero in mk 1, Reptile in mk2 and Smoke in mk 3.
Any Mishima is fine with me in Tekken. But only Tekken 3 for Jin.
And Fulgore for Killer Instinct. Love the way he looks.
Ryu is pretty easy and well balanced, So I think he is a noob character, although I played Dhalsim for a long time when Street Fighter first came out.
Sub Zero looks bad ass and his freeze move is my personal favorite, his fatality in mk 1 is the best one easily! Reptile looks great in mk 2 and has great moves. He looks terrible in every other mk. Smoke is bad ass in mk 3, ok fine he is just scorpion really.
Jin Kazama was my first favorite character, but I hated how they changed him in Tekkan 4, so switched to Kazuya and am right at home. Heihachi is also fun.
I just loved the look of Fulgore, those laser claws look great and his finisher is very cool.

The only fighting game I was ever any good at was the Soul Caliber series, and I was a master of Nightmare/Siegfried.
Everybody always groaned when I'd pick him, thinking I'd just spam one button, taking advantage of the reach and attack, but, I knew every single possible combo that motherf***er was capable of, and I would destroy people.
Bruiser, I guess?

Usually it's Ryu or Ryu-type characters. More recently I've started to drift towards the Bruce Lee clone if they're there in the game. Even better if one of their alternate costumes is the Game of Death tracksuit.

All about the speed. Sure my character might not hit as hard, but who cares when I can hit a combo and escape in the time it takes you to throw one slow-ass punch?

Pretty much any character that uses their speed to get inside and just decimate their opponent, a la Johnny Cage in MK9.

The one with the simplest moves to execute. I rarely use special moves. Simple kicks, throws, blocks and sweeps are usually sufficient to win.

Zoner + Freak is usually a prerequisite I have for a fighting game character.
So Dhalsim, Voldo, Dormammu, Noob Saibot, Shuma-Gorath, Iori, Spinal, Bishammon, Sub-Zero are some of the charcaters I like using.
