But the cameos are still fun. 3 Little Pigs, Robin Hood... It wasn't Robin Hood. They just rotoscoped other characters and repainted them.

And I'm certain Skippy's mom and the "old owl lady" appear too moments later. I've also heard that Otto (the dog with the crutch in RH) is the dog who asks Scrooge for money at the very beginning. The dancing animals at Fezziwig's party are most likely rotoscopes, though, since that dancing sequence in ROBIN HOOD was actually redrawn footage from ARISTOCATS and I think even SNOW WHITE anyway.

Mickey's Christmas Carol is always my "main event" special to watch each December. My brother and I were practically raised on it; our old artificial Christmas tree used to be called our "Disney tree" because of all the ornaments we had based on it. We even still have the VHS that includes the "Making of..." doc, which I finally got to watch again last year. It's short, it loses some of the creepy atmosphere of a lot of other Christmas Carol retellings, but it just hits all the right notes and has a feeling and quality that makes it work thirty years on, regardless if it came out of the "Disney dark ages" or not.
Never liked that "Disney Dark Age" title, really; frankly, there's a lot about that era that I genuinely like, though it may have a lot to do with being raised on it. Regardless, a big reason the animation department took a step backward, yes, even during Walt's final years, was because the company had shifted focus toward the theme parks and the EPCOT project.

A lesser person would "whoosh" you, instead, I'll just say I was making a reference to a criticism about the character designs in Robin Hood itself. (that they were just recycled from other movies...)

Regardless, a big reason the animation department took a step backward, yes, even during Walt's final years, was because the company had shifted focus toward the theme parks and the EPCOT project. Same here. I grew up during that era, first visited the parks during it, and claim many productions of it as my favorite Disney things ever (ROBIN HOOD, CHRISTMAS CAROL, DUCKTALES). It's just fascinating to learn about parts of Disney history like this; where you realize there was something they consider a "dark age" and to learn how fallen behind the animation department was compared to the days of Walt and the Lion King-and-beyond "cha-ching" days we're still in now. Skippy and Toby are totally in there, at the end. And I'm certain Skippy's mom and the "old owl lady" appear too moments later. I suspected that's what you were doing, but when I suddenly remembered all their names without the use of Wikipedia I needed to reply and sound smart for 8.3 seconds.
