Summer Olympics I get. Sport. Running, jumping, swimming, rowing, shooting, throwing, boxing - and all the rest of it. Many sports many of us participate in recreationally. But the winter Olympics just seems to be, largely, various ways of sliding on ice. Now skiing is fine, but it's not a sport is it? It's a holiday choice for the moderately affluent.
I've always considered the winter games to be the significantly less important cousin of the summer games. Like fall is the less glamorous season or X-Factor the junior partner to American Idol. It's just people sliding on snow or ice in various ways. If you were told you were going to meet a former Olympic gold medal winner, let's face if you'd want it to be someone from the summer games, wouldn't you?

Winter is way more exciting. So many sharp blades on people's feet and sleds. Who knows what could happen!

Luge is probably one of the most dangerous things to exist. Winter Olympics are great.

Never was a fan of the Summer Olympics.
Winter though? Love that shit!
Bobsled, skeleton, hockey, skiing/slalom, speed skating, snowboarding, ski jumping...even figure skating! Just more exciting to me.

For me, there are just WAY too many sports at the Summer Games. It's always just America or China (or Soviet Union in the past) who have a chance at the most Gold Medals.
In the Winter Games at least 6 nations have a chance at the most Gold Medals. Not to mention it has a VERY competitive hockey tournament. Yes, the Summer games have basketball, but the US were 2/1 favorites to win. That's not really exciting.
For every Summer games fan this disses curling, your fav Olympics has power walking as a sport.

Only because we beat the Soviets at the sport they were dominating everyone at, and they did it with a bunch of literal amateurs. It was the apex of the Cold War. So that's why it was a big deal. That being said the hockey tournament is the main event of the Winter Olympics, imo.

That being said it will suck the day curling does out because they run out of the rock used to make the curling stones.

The skeleton. Named for its history of umm....death. Yeah, that is a little more impressive than running and jumping hurtles. Bobsled, short track speed skating(my favorite), the difficulty, skill and athleticism needed for figure skating is only paralleled by ballet and ballet has no sports tie in. Curling? Ok, it's a skill game rather than a sport but shooting is an Olympic sport I would call a skill game. Shooting? Summer Olympics. Yes to the OP's main point, the winter Olympiad is a lesser cousin to the summer games but winter sports are no less athletic than their summer counter parts. Love me some short track speed skating. I'll take that over summer track and field any day

By that logic, running isn't a sport, it's an exercise choice for those too cheap to pay for a gym membership.
Anything that is athletic in nature and is competed in can be considered a sport.

damn right it does. I'm kinda the opposite, i couldn't be arsed about the summer games but I pretty much shut down whatever else I'm doing when the Winter Games are on, especially Hockey.
