The only way this is acceptable to me is if you were born onto cheering for another team that isn't local. I don't get people who just now find sports interesting and declare allegiance to whatever team happens to be on top. I had a buddy who didn't follow sports until recently and he became a "diehard" Colts fan the year they went to the Superbowl. Then when Manning went to Denver he started rooting for them as his 2nd team.

Family traditions? My team is Manchester United despite never living anywhere near Manchester because my grandfather is from Salford, and it was through him I got into football.

That's what is great when you watch a league that isn't nowhere near locally to you, you can choose any team but you make a commitment to that team! Colts fan since 2001 when I started watching the NFL and haven't became a Broncos fan!

I'm not a sports fan at all, but when I was in high school, where I was at sucked and most of my good friends went to another school, so I usually rooted for that one.

When I first got into football, I supported the Cincinnati Bengals because I liked their helmets, even though they were absolutely horrible, and the 49ers, who I should have been rooting for, were one of the best dynasties in sports history. I switched back just in time for our 5th Super Bowl championship.
I was also a huge fan of the Jordan-era Bulls, and just couldn't put myself through the masochism of being a Warriors fan. Also supported the Penguins when they had Mario Lemieux and I wasn't sure just how competitive the brand-new Sharks would be over the long run.

I took after my father, his teams and everything with sports. Although, I'm on the verge of ending my current-16( year relationship with the Lakers (but don't have the slightest idea who I'd replace them with or if I even want to keep following the NBA)

I get it if you just hate "the machine."
For example, I live where fans of THE Ohio State University is a thing.
Now I've nothing against them. I was raised to root for them. There's a lot of teams I would prefer they beat, but I don't really fly the scarlet and grey flag because..... shit's annoying.
It's not fandom aroud here, it fanaticism and it's not helped by the healthy percentage of fans that are drunken horn tooters that are no longer capable of viewing the game objectively.

I never understood why it was a big deal. Just because you're born/reside somewhere doesn't mean you have to like everything about that place, sports teams included. Maybe you like the way another team plays (strategy, pace, etc.), maybe your favorite player is on another team, maybe you're tired of the constant bonehead moves by GMs and owners, etc..
As someone from Oakland, I would have a hell of time trying to convince someone to be a Raiders fan given that the team has just been awful for the past decade.

At school you had a choice, Southampton or Brighton. I chose Saints as (at the time) they were the underdogs. I also support Crewe Alexandra as that's where Dad's family emigrated to from Ireland.
Of course, where I grew up you also had the Pompey choice....

In this country we get it a lot with Manchester United fans, I know a few who've never been to Manchester and they weren't born into it like the earlier poster. They simply support them because they win everything.
Where I live is mostly split between Newcastle and Sunderland though and I support the former.

It's extremely common in the UK not to support your local team.

I will choose a team I like because I enjoy watching them play, not because of their region. What kinds of trouble would this country have had if everyone stuck to their guns because of where they lived.

It's interesting that a lot of people were glory hunters when choosing Forest or Leeds as their team but have stuck with them after they've fell through the leagues, even their kids often end up supporting them. I must say I respect such fans, it's the ones that would walk away once they start doing badly which I don't like.

...Maybe because the home team sucks and aren't exciting to watch at all? Or because they make boneheaded decisions?

I prefer people supporting teams because they want to; not because they're SUPPOSED to. My cousin, for example, is a fan of the New York Yankees. But if you ask her why, she'll say it's because they're America's team and we're all supposed to be their fans.
No. Just, no.

I am from a town in the shadow of Houston and grew up an Oilers fan and mildly interested in the Cowboys. When the oilers moved off my heart broke so I adopted Dallas full time. When Houston was awarded a new franchise, Tennessee had just changed the name of their team. I and many others assumed they would buy the rights and name the new team the Oilers. Them not doing so was strikes two and three all at once. I have not and will not cheer for the Houston texans. I know that may sound bitter or immature, but I literally grew up on Houston Oiler football and to have it taken away over greed hurt me and wounded my trust at an impressionable age.

For example, i happen to be from Mississippi, yet my favorite Basketball teams are the Bulls and Celtics. The New Orleans Pelicans (the closest local team) just dont interest me as a fan. And why does this only apply to team sports? I doubt every New Yorker was a Mike Tyson fan, or all residents of Washington being Randy Couture fans (and yes, i know they fight outside of their local area, but the argument stands).

I grew up in Wisconsin. I am a Cubs fan, a New York Rangers fan and a Chiefs fan. I got my allegance to the Cubs and Rangers due to my dad being fans of both of them. It was also easier at that time to watch a Cubs game on TV than the Brewers.
My reason for liking the Chiefs is kind of bizarre though. I never really cared to watch football as a kid. I loved playing Tecmo Super Bowl. My favorite team was the 49ers since I loved to pass. I started to casually follow football more, specifically Joe Montana. My young brain thought he was wronged by the 49ers by being traded to the Cheifs. I started to follow the Cheifs. Montana retired. I wasn't going back to the 49ers. I never followed the Packers. I just stayed with the Cheifs.

I live in upstate New York and root for the Seattle Seahawks and when they existed I rooted for the Supersonics too. I choose the Seahawks over the Bills, Giants and Jets when I was in elementary school because most of my friends were fans of those three and I wanted to root for someone different. My godparents lived in Seattle and sent me a Rick Mirer jersey for Christmas one year so that sealed the deal for me. It was at about the same time I started rooting for the Sonics. Basketball was never really big between me and my friends so I think a lot of that honestly had to do with NBA JAM and being able to use Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp on that game.
